How to ward off a competitor doing nasty things to my website business?

1st of all I would like to say that this is a great forum with very knowledgeable members. Been lurking for a while just singed up recently.

A competitor already screwed up our site via SQL injection and sends fake accounts to our Facebook trying to mess up our reputable name by talking trash.

Recently our site went from #1 and #3 in 2 profitable key phrases to #18 and #11. Maybe our competitor is throwing negative SEO our way? (Could this be due to the recent Google updates? I am not sure?)
I assume our competitor is going to try to negatively impact our SEO work. Try to get Google to sandbox or push us back in the rankings.

My Question: What can we do to make sure no negative SEO work against our website will hurt us in the Google rankings?

Thanks everyone for looking at my thread

Build high quality links to balance out any low level ones.
Take action if you see negative reviews about your site.
Keep an eye on your stats for suspicious activity.
Develop other sources of traffic so you are not so Google dependent.

If it continues address it by contacting the person and seeing why he is doing it and having a conversation to resolve the issue. Go the legal path if it does not stop.

what you focus on expands, therefore focus on the good.

it would be RARE if your competitors do a negative seo campaign against you.
