I am gonna be sick... i used to own surface tablet.com

Ok so a few years ago Microsoft announced their surface technology... so I registered about 10 decent domains... one of them being surfacetablet.com

A while back I decided to let my surface domains expire because after years nothing was shaking, seemed like a forgotten tech.

And today Microsoft announces surface tablet. So now I am sick, felt like that domain would of skyrocketed in value to 10k maybe way more????

I remember back in the day Tom Merrit from Cnet's Buzz Out Loud talked about owning a domain name that he let expire and a couple years later sold for hundreds of thousands. It happens.

I can certainly understand and justify letting it go, without the technology being named as such the keywords themselves are rather generic and don't go together. It's the products that bind everything.

don't feel too sick, because if microsoft trade marked it (which I'm sure they did) and then you tried to sell it to someone else after that, you could possibly get in a lot of trouble for monetizing a registered trademark that isn't your own which is super illegal.

Dont feel bad about it. To make up for it, go out there and start getting sales like crazy. Through alot of advertising at it, and make sure your backend marketing campaign is on point.

There is absolutely nothing to feel sick about -- apart from wasting all that money registering those domains for years.

Microsoft would have that name trademarked so you would have had to likely surrendered the domain anyway. You wouldn't have made a penny.

That's why you should never waste your time buying domains based around popular product names like that. Trademark law will make you give up those domains if someone owns the trademark to that term or product or service.

Yeah there is a good chance he would because they now "own" the trademark. I'm not going to get in to legalities but it would be illegal to monetize it based on their trademark.

I don't think that is entirely true if you have purchased the domain with the intent to profit off someone else's brand or trademark (even if the trademark does not yet exist) -- which is why this domain was purchased in the first place.

I think you would find it hard to win that case against Microsoft. Besides, I would think they'd be smart enough to go and trademark that name before they started talking about it to the public.

They'd have that domain back from you in a second unless you could prove some logical reason as to why you registered it in the first place.

No you don't have to surrender it if you registered it before trademark. Otherwise lots of people would start trademarking popular website names to "steal" them away. Lots of popular site names are not trademarked. The only way I could see them taking a name away is if you are trying to pretend to be that company.

I had the name registered May 30 2007. So way before the tablet came out (also had the plural surfacetablets.com). I think I would of been ok.

I dropped my extra vista names (sold a few of those, came out way ahead) and thought it was time to drop surface names

Once they have the term trademarked, they could easily issue a cease a desist order. Thereby making the domain, worthless. Part of the trademark process, is a grace period for those to challenge pending trademarks. You would have had to be actively using surfacetablet.com. I forget the term, but "first in commerce" rings a bell. If you can prove you were using a name first, before it became trademarked...you may have a case.

For me, I think the trademark process took almost a year from start to finish, and about $1,000. So I don't see people jumping on the "just trademark it" bandwagon. There are a lot of variable's along the way.

Oh man no way that was you? I registered your domain name awhile back and I ended up selling it for $43k last week to private company. I think they may have been working on behalf of microsoft. Probably could of gotten more.

Have you heard about the marketer John Reese?

He sold a high quality domain for $1000 (after having bought it for $100).

The guy who bought it off him sold it for $1,000,000 that day. He felt guilty and told John about it.

While he felt annoyed at the time, he used that annoyance to focus on his marketing career which was a success.

I was 12 back in 1991 when I went to a stockbroker and said I wanted to buy shares in a fiber optics company; he laughed at me, 7 years later the share prices went meteoric from fractions of pennies to POUNDS and I would be an extremely rich man right now sitting in my pad in Marbella instead of a rained out terrace in the North of England. I have done similar things with purchased domains that I let expire...ouch.

But what is done is done.

Move forward. You had one great idea for domains. You will have other great ideas. Incredible ideas!

I appreciate you sharing, and I feel your pain as well.

This the same reason why I have some old domains that I don't
use and just keep renewing them. As soon as I get the urge to
let them expire this same scenario comes to mind and I keep
them. You never know.

I may retire on sale of just one of those domains some day.
