Is my understanding correct with affiliate marketing where my website urls can appear on other peoples websites and they drive traffic to my website? and how do i set this up?

    Yes.

    As long as they are ok with that. For example, you can't have affiliate links in your forum signature in this forum.

    Just put up good quality, original content somewhere (on your own site, or on a free site), with relevant affiliate products (using your affiliate link), and you will get some visitors, and maybe some buyers. It's that simple.

    Do that first, then come back here and ask how to improve things like conversion, traffic, etc.

    I think you are getting mixed up with advertising and affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is where you sell someone else's product for a commission - but in your case I think what you want to do is drive traffic to your site, which sells your own services (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

    You can generate traffic through paid advertising, for example through Google or in ezines related to your niche, or go for free traffic through SEO, forum posting, blog commenting, article marketing, Yahoo Answers, etc. Search this forum for more information about how to get traffic.
