Default Facebook Fan Pages vs Twitter

So what's your take on the news about Facebooks new "Fan Pages" format?

The changes are coming or are already hitting. On Facebook it reads...

"Pages are now more like profiles. Update your Page now.
Pages now look and behave more like user profiles. You can more easily publish content to your Page's Wall and gain distribution through News Feed. Learn about how to take advantage of the new features.

Right now, your fans are still seeing the old version of your Page. Take advantage of this opportunity to edit your Page before it gets automatically republished, which will happen soon. As soon as your Page is edited and ready, republish it."

Apparently it's going to have "LIVE FEEDS" and elements similar to Twitter. I saw Ed Dale doing back flips about it in a email.

Gary Vaynerchuk had this to say...

Gary Vaynerchuk - Facebook fan pages are new and what do they mean...

And there is all kinds of buzz going on in the social media world.

So I'd like to ask..

1. What ramifications do you think this has for marketers?

and ...

2. What is the URL of your fan page?

Mine's at...

It would be cool to have Warriors list their pages so we can see who's implementing and using Fan Pages successfully.

As a non-Facebook user, I would say that one of the factors not in its favor are the ugly URLs.

Compare your Facebook fan page URL:

Code:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jason-Moffatt/7471621516
to your Twitter URL:

Code:
http://twitter.com/jasonmoffatt
Twitter is simpler. Nice and easy. On Facebook, it looks like an after-thought--no doubt because that's exactly what it is.

On the one hand, I have people telling me to get on Facebook. But, on the other hand, I have a nagging feeling that Facebook is the next MySpace.

I'm not a fan of fan pages. I find using Twitter is much easier than checking Facebook all day and really I think the Twitter community is more mature and social than Facebook. People on Twitter are getting things done, while Facebook is just a time waster for the most part.

Don't get me wrong, I use Facebook to connect with people, but I think Twitter is much more powerful. Facebook is just too noisy for my tastes.

I agree that Facebook has some quirks I don't enjoy, like...

1. Slow as molasses page loading
2. Bull**** ads that have nothing to do with my profile
3. Too many crazy apps and invitations
4. People tagging me in photos and videos I'm not in.

And let's face it, Twitter is just easier.

However, the amount of people using Facebook compared to Twitter is staggering. Twitter is small fries in comparison to Facebook. It's going to be interesting to see how it pans out.

Whether you like it or not should probably not be the guiding factor of whether or not you use it though. I'd encourage people to spread their brands across all the platforms, even if you are annoyed with Facebook.

I used to loathe Facebook, but the more I use it the more I get used to it, the more I dig it.

Hey Jason,

My thoughts:

1. What ramifications do you think this has for marketers?

I don't think of it as a Twitter killer. There are always going to be people who are only on one social network. Most of the world isn't like us crazy marketers. They do MySpace or Facebook or Twitter.

But I like the new layout and definitely feel that this will improve the fan page and make it an even better tool to have in our arsenal.

The hidden benefit to the live feed has always been that it shows up in the feed and on the pages of all of your fans. Now that they've made it easier and cleaner to do a page I can see more people using them.

Since Fan pages are indexed by Google I think everyone should have one for their business. Mine shows up #5 after my blog, my blogtalkradio and my YouTube accounts.

you

and ...

2. What is the URL of your fan page?

Hehe...

Anyway, maybe I could put up a page on Facebook... and ask people to follow me on Twitter. LOL!
