Im just wondering how people are getting away with affiliate links in their sigs when it's against the forum rules. My buddy got banned for it but I see affiliate links all the time. What's up with that?

The people who are getting away with it won't for long. Most of us who take the time to notice things like that hit the little red 'report' triangle and let the mods know to take a closer look. Sometimes the mod will just delete the sig, sometimes they'll remove sig privileges, and if it keeps happening, they'll ban the user.

It all depends on which mod catches it, though.

This isn't prison. You won't get Shanked for reporting someone.

He must have done more than just "had an affiliate link", then, I think. People don't get banned for a first offense - they just get their sig-file removed. If he did it again, after a warning, that's a different matter, perhaps?

I don't; I see them very rarely and just click on the little red triangle when I see one.

I think it depends on whether they've done it regularly/repeatedly/willfully. Circumstances vary. Even courts don't give everyone the same sentence for the same offense, do they? What's "messed up" about that?

It could be that the links are to their own products,
it could be that the links are to other things allowed
in the rules, or it could just be that the moderators
    haven't noticed yet.

The fact that your buddy got banned for it shows that
they enforce the rules, but he must have also repeatedly
broken the rules... the moderators aren't unreasonable,
but they have seen almost every trick in the books.

I spent 4 years as a moderator, and enforcing the rules
all day can also make a person trigger happy

Unfortunately, I don't see the ones that you saw and mentioned here. Perhaps the moderators are so quick to ban the accounts that have violated the rule of adding affiliate links before I see them.

If you do, why not simply click the Report button?

Seriously, the Forum Rules are not hard to follow. How worth is your WF account? It's just a matter of discipline and following instructions. It's because if you can't have it and do them, I am not sure how are you going to succeed on your online business.

To your friend, I hope this would serve as a lesson to him/her.

    Sincerely,

Please read this thread in the forum stickies...

The mods can't be everywhere. And you're not 'ratting' on anyone - just like calling the authorities if you see a crime - the community needs to police itself. The alternative (draconian police state) is not something I'd like to see....

I must admit you people have confused me. I understood an affiliate to be something like Amazon. I signed up with them to become an affiliate. Then I joined WF and read things like "get some affiliates working for you" (What does this mean?)

Now were talking about affiliate links in the sig box...which kind of affiliate are we talkin and how do you know its an affiliate?

Amazon sells products via an affiliate programs, which
uses commissioned salespeople, referred to as affiliates.

When people on the forum say "get some affiliates" they mean
recruit some people to help you sell your products, paying them
a percentage commission for the sales that they produce.

Where it says no affiliates links in the signature file, it means
that you can't use the links given to you by programs like
Amazon.com in your sig file. Part of the reason is that lots
of people would register at the forum and make low quality
posts just to get their affiliate links in more places, in hope
of getting a click. The rule is there for other reasons, but it
is partly to keep the quality of forum posts up... and also to
keep it from degenerating to where you have hundreds of
people all trying to sell the same product to each other
      via their forum signature

WF is very strict about the terms and conditions.

So, any one crossing the rules against the Wf will be banned immediately.

So your friend has been banned like that.

If you see any one using like that, you can just report that to admin.

Any moderators will see that and decide weather that is against the rules or not.

      Not quite accurate.

There are only a few things that will get you banned first time, every time. They're the sorts of things sensible people know are unacceptable.

Affiliate links in signatures? Ummm... No. We'd just turn off their signature. Maybe give them a a temporary ban as a reminder. But permanent? Not by itself.

Now, if you have someone running around posting affiliate links in the bodies of posts... Yeah. That could get you banned, if you do it as a pattern. Or if you're brand new and posting a lot of meaningless drivel in what looks like a campaign to get sig file exposure, whether it's an affiliate link or not. That is spamming.

Thanks @Willie Crawford for the explanation. A follow up question to better understand the no affilate in the sig rule.

Okay putting a link to something like Amazon Bad

What about the other definition of affiliate? If I had hired someone to help me with the sales of my product and linked to them would that be allowed? (I'm not saying I want to do this I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the different meanings of affiliate)

BTW how does someone go about finding affiliates to help them sell their product? Is there a place that you post?
