why the hype with mobile sites?

Lately I have been bombarded with emails about providing mobile sites, look at the forum and wso's, there's tons of stuff about creating mobile sites, my question is,
Is it really worth the effort, most smart phones will veiw a normal site just fine, and more and more people are owning smart phones. Those without a smart phone a highly unlikely to use their phone to browse the internet, let alone purchase. I've done a lot of asking around and all the people without a smartphone have stated they wouldnt trust the security of their handset! So what is the big deal? Surely its a dying niche!!!

Any thoughts on this?

Is the trend of the moment, now you use the phone much to buy online, so it pays to study mobile marketing.

I know its the trend, my question was why! The reason more people browse and buy from their phones is because smart phones don't need a mobile site to work well, so my point was why bother with mobile sites?

Because something has to be the next big thing, and everyone wanting to be a Galileo seems to settled on mobile sites. The smart phone aspect seems to be overlooked quite often actually. It works for now where people still have a need for mobile sites; but I'd wager there is a finite end to the usefulness of mobile sites, just like any other trend.

Now watch those who sell and hype it come in and say it will last forever .

To be honest I'm done reading the subject, like i said I've been researching the subject this week, read a ton of reports, blogs, sales pages and more, there are some great arguments but its all theory, and unfortunately it does'nt matter how business like and inteligent you make it, you simply can't escape reality! As Joe Robinson quite rightly says its a fad and those who have invested time in it will milk it for all its worth, but I just can't escape the fact that common sense tells me smart phones are a PC in your pocket, mobile sites leave you feeling like your missing out on something, and with the amount of security risk nowadays I can't see many people typing in their card details on a phone without the security a smart phone gives you!

Im pleased to hear Joes comments as so many people seem on the band wagon I was starting to think I'm missing something!

P.S. Im not doubting that people are doing very well out of it now, I just feel its future only round the corner!

Mobile marketing is hot right now, like Pinterest. You never know how much sales it can provide for you if you do it. Plus, alot of people that i know enjoy reading books, emails, and other things from their advanced mobile phones.

If I'm honest I think, most smartphones don't view normal websites just fine. Theres all the sideways scrolling and massive text it's really awkward but with a mobile site it's incredibly easy and most have a click to call function which can be very useful.

All in all I think it's definitely worth a mobile site.

There are ways of designing sites for mobile that do add a great deal to functionality.

I work with some restaurants and we developed a custom platform to allow reservations and even pre-ordering in some situations. Those are things you can make "1 click" with a specific mobile site that may not be as noticeable or easy to do on normal pages when viewed from a phone.

We also look to integrate or link to maps more with mobile sites. The address is good, but when your on you phone and driving to the place, directions and a map are much better.

The focus of what people do on mobile sites is different from what they do when visiting from a computer. Smart marketers realize that and build functionality to mobiles sites.

Some of us don't just sell "mobile sites" just to be selling mobiles sites because they are hot.

I consider mobile, especially mobile sites to be more about local than anything else. For example, its likely you will be using mobile to find a restaurant in the area you are in rather than in some far off town, and then when you do; you're wanting key information about the restaurant, such as how to contact them.
