Who are these 'Gurus' you speak of?

So, I'm relatively new to Internet Marketing, only starting up just after new year 2012. Like almost every newbie I suffered from information overload and bought as many products as I can afford, thankfully I snapped out of it pretty quick.

I can't remember one sales video that didn't state they "hate gurus" or promise "I am not a guru". It got really annoying and I started to pick up on it for every sales video.

The problem is I have NEVER, EVER seen a guru or someone advertising them selves as a guru. This might be me being naive, or being a noob, but are there actually any gurus out there?

Thanks,
Tim

I had noticed that too, along with a few other over-used phrases. For example if anyone uses the phrase no-brainer it's going to have to be SERIOUSLY good for me to even read beyond that phrase. Similarly with "crushing it", "sick" (from anyone over 15 years of age) and I'm sure I could come up with a few more. Oh yeah, the "I'm not going to try to impress you with the size of my clickbank account... but here it is".

Makes you wonder how I ended up with all that stuff on my hard drive, mind you. I'm not immune.

The term has such negative connotations to it nowadays that nobody calls themselves a guru. If you are a guru, then you are essentially someone that has never made a dime online outside of teaching how to make money online. It's a paradox that people finally started waking up to, so the guru label had to go. However, if you do this (teach instead of doing) then you are still going to be called a guru.

Tim -- good point. No one ever mentions any "guru" by name. And that's if there really are any "gurus" at all

I can't recall any well-known marketer even calling him/herself that as well. For example, a marketer such as Frank Kern may be referred to as a "Guru" by others; however, I don't ever remember him referring to himself as a "guru".

As a matter of fact, the only marketer I know that actually uses the word "guru" is Scott Boulch (great guy, by the way) -- and he uses the title, "The *Nada* Guru" which basically means "NON guru or guru of nothing. I've always gotten a kick out of that

I think it's just a title that we've just endowed on certain individuals based on our perception of their success.

Guru's are simply people who make more money than we do.

As a result, sometimes I am the "guru" that people hate.... :p

Ya know, I asked one of our more prominent "guru bashers" recently what he meant by the word. Dude is constantly sending emails and making posts about the Evil Gurus, and I was curious to see if his definition was consistent with his position.

His response was that he had to think about it. All I could think was, "Didn't your parents ever tell you not to use words if you don't know what they mean?"

I don't use the word to mean the same thing you do, but at least having a clear definition makes it possible to communicate in a meaningful way. And what you've just described very likely sums up how a lot of people use the word.

      Nice. Thanks.

Yes, I make every people, that earned more money than I am, my guru.

I don't care if the 'guru' have the most advanced technique in SEO,
I don't care if the 'guru' has discovered a new huge source of traffic,
I do care if the 'guru' earn 2 times than me, and do it with 2 times faster than me.

    here is how wikipedia defines a Guru;
Guru is a Sanskrit term for "teacher" or "master"

my inference from this definition: someone who is skilled in a perticular thing and can effectively teach others successfully can be defined as a guru
