Keyword Tools Are Way Off (Yes, Google, You Too!)

Anybody else finding this on any of their sites?

Google KW Tool reports X amount of exact search traffic every month. Then you go to your Analytics, you have the #1 spot, and your traffic for that exact keyword isn't anywhere close to X.

I've seen examples in which we get way more then X and other examples way less then X. And, by the way, Google isn't the only tool I've checked against, other tools seem to have data that is way off.

It's always been my understanding that Keyword tools are meant to give you an idea but are not exact. I've seen some weird variations myself and especially when comparing Google to other products. Not sure I get it anymore than you do!

That's based on the assumption you are getting all the traffic which is unlikely. Sites that are on position 2 all the way to 10 will also get traffic.

Its more likely at No. 1 you are getting 40% of the traffic and if you multiply that to 100% does it match with the Google keyword tool?

Make sure in Google Adwords Keyword tool you have exact match checked so it brings up the searches for your phrase.

Also searches are (I think) from the previous month and may go up or down depending on whether it is an event etc...

For instance searches for The Olympics will start going up now.

But I have noticed this too - I use it as a guide and sometimes I have had keywords that did not get many searches but bring in a ton of traffic!
