Shareasale too small to market my product? Need insight on program

Hi all,

I run a new graphic design agency and my PPC campaigns haven't performed as well as I'd like... a few months even losing money on this campaign on ad costs due to low conversion rates so I was looking at affiliate marketing to remedy this situation.

I've looked into it and I think the best two affiliate options would be CJ and ShareASale... I think CJ is out of the question because their costs and fees and requirements are too high (3,000 to sign up I believe) while Shareasale (500 one time fee) is much more reasonable.

The thing I'm worried about is whether or not ShareAsale even has enough publishers.... whether or not any publishers would sign up for my program (I plan on offering high commissions... 30% on a 200+ dollar product)

Does anyone have any insight on ShareaSale (publisher sign up chances, performance, etc) before I Jump the gun and make the 500 dollar investment to join it?

I think you better to use Linkshare. It's bigger than Shareasale. You could get more affiliates there.

Even Apple runs their App/ iTunes Store Affiliate program through Linkshare.

Isn't Linkshare expensive to join and have high monthly costs? I can't afford that currently.

And my product is graphic design (specifically logo)

Joining even the biggest network is not a magic pill to get productive affiliates.

Even with the biggest networks, you will still need to go out and proactively seek affiliates. You are still going to have to hustle a bit as a new merchant.

Exactly. That's something I was careful to explain to the buyers of my WSO about becoming a ClickBank vendor. People think you just sign up as a vendor and affiliates will flood through the gates to sell your product. In reality, your own recruitment efforts are what will bring you the best affiliates when you are just starting out.

But is shareasale even worth the 500 dollar investment (budget is tight)?

If by that you mean "will you get alot of good affiliates quickly from shareasale" then the answer is very likely no. But my answer would be the same if you go with cj or linkshare.

The biggest thing those networks will give you up front as a new smallish merchant is credibility that you will pay affiliate commissions and not run off with the money.

How are you accepting payments now? There may be much cheaper solutions that would do ok now and then you can move to a network later once things get rolling.

I wouldnt advise you to spend you last 500 market dollars to get with shareasale.

Exactly! Affiliate platforms have a nice base of affiliates for the most part, but you should ALWAYS be proactively searching for websites that could be a good fit to promote your service

I think if you have problem in getting affiliates, you should launch your service as WSO and use Warriorplus to get affiliates for your service.

It's easier to get affiliates from W+.

ShareASale can be a very effective platform for merchants that put the effort into it - recruit affiliates, offer competitive commissions, but most importantly - work on the conversion issue that you mentioned earlier. You can offer your affiliates a $1000 commission on every sale, but if you have a 0% conversion rate that $1000 will equal $0. Affiliates are smart and will figure that out quickly when they aren't getting any conversions from you...when they figure it out, they will go somewhere that has a better "offer".

ShareASale has some incredible tools and features (in fact, some of the best in the industry), over 500,000 registered affiliates, 3600 merchants etc. The size of the network is comparable to any other network. But it is a self-managed platform . That means that YOU control the program, YOU recruit affiliates, YOU communicate with them. Be wary of a commission based network that offers to manage your program...big conflict of interest there.

Finally, B2B merchants will always have more challenges to overcome within affiliate marketing. Simply because affiliates tend to go where the sales are...there are many more individuals buying online than there are businesses. B2C = Huge, B2B = still up and coming. Don't expect huge numbers right away. It will certainly take some time to grow your affiliate program to see the results that you are looking for.

How do we recruit people on ShareASale? Is there a list where we just browse relevant sites and shoot them private messages?

I wish it were just that easy. The process of finding affiliates is largely a one to on adventure using google to find relevant sites that might be interested in your offer. There are things you can do to find out who is linking to or promoting your competitors. Then you just make them a better offer.

Hmmm I see.... So what it sounds like is that I'm paying 500 dollars to shareasale just to use their PLATFORM?!

I can create my own affiliate platform (via premium wordpress plugins) myself!

well, its not just to use their platform. They do have a network of affiliates who are already familiar with shareasale, so they would be more likely to promote a merchant using shareasale than other methods.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, for small newish merchants, the biggest reason to go with a shareasale type company is that it gives your potential affiliates confidence they will be paid since a 3rd party pays them.

Being part of a 3rd party system like shareasale, very well may help you recruit affiliates due to the credibility factor. But joining a network is not likely to bring you lots of great affiliates on its own.

They have a directory that lists all the merchants that use their platform.

      here is the link
      ShareASale

Brian runs a good system with shareasale.com. He has been around a really long time and has built a solid service for small to medium size merchants.

Its not a bad option. I just don't want you to go into it thinking you are very likely to get a whole bunch of affiliates promoting your offer 2 days after you signup.

So what are the odds that soemone will eventually find me and request to become an affiliate after I join ShareASale without me actively finding publishers?

If you just site at home and wait for people to visit your website you will have a long wait. That goes for customers or affiliates. Unless you do some sort of advertising or use some grunt work marketing methods, I would predict you would have very few people visit your site or ask to promote it.

There are hundreds of affiliate programs out there for similar products(not all at shareasale). What would make anyone just randomly decide to promote your site over the countless others than can promote?
