Can anybody explain trackbacks and pingbacks to me?

I've been getting a number of trackback/pingback requests for a niche blog of mine recently. Now as far as I can make out, these come from RSS feed auto blogs where the first paragraph of the post being requested will appear on that auto blog, and if people click on that post they'll be redirected to my site. Is this correct, meaning I get a backlink?
