You only have to read this piece of information: Enable and Disable Comments in WordPress

I've also found a WP plugin, for which I'm not an affiliate of, just in case you don't want to follow the one I gave above. Here it is: Disable Comment in WP

    I hope this helps.

Real comments can be valuable additions, so I hate turning them off altogether. What I've arrived at is a one-two combination that keeps things manageable.

        > Install and activate both Akismet and Bad Behavior plugins.

        > Set comments to 'all comments must be approved by an administrator'.

Just don't get sucked in by flattering comments. Check out this thread:

I have installed Akismet, but its asking for Akismet API key

Akismet is almost ready. You must enter your Akismet API key for it to work.

You can get your Akimest API key by signing up for a free account at WordPress.com, and they'll provide you with an API key to use.

Whilst enabling Akimest will stop the comments from being posted, it's not going to stop the bots accessing your site and attempting to post comments, so you wont save any bandwidth in the short term.

My suggestion would be to filter the traffic via Cloudflare - they filter out "junk traffic" before it gets to the server, so you'd cut off the spam bots before they even reached your site, thus saving your bandwidth.

If you are with a cPanel based host, have a look in the cPanel for a Cloudflare icon, most hosts will have it installed by now. If not, you can sign up directly for a free account @ Home | CloudFlare | The web performance & security company

            Here you go. https://akismet.com/signup/

Sign up for the Personal package and you'll have the option of getting your API for free. You can turn the slider all the way down to ZERO or can donate a minimum of $6 for your use of the plug-in. It's up to you. I have donated from time to time, but have also grabbed my API for free. Do as you personally please regarding that.

I put the following disclaimer on all my blogs:
"If I want your opinion, I'll ask for it."
      Works for me!
