Flippa silently raises base listing fee to $29

Flippa has once again raised their fees, they are always trying to find a way to make more money for themselves!

The base listing price for an auction without any addons was $19 just a couple days ago, and is now $29. https://flippa.com/pricing

The worst part is they were silent about this and haven't made any announcements on their channels such as blog, facebook or Twitter. I'm sure they were hoping people wouldn't realize and that appears to be the case as I do not see anyone mentioning this in any other forum!

That's insane. Flippa listing fees are getting out of hand, need to get a serious alternative.

They were already making tons of profit off of their previous fees. This is not to mention they recently raised the maximum success fee from $500 to $2000.

just out of curiosity, how do you know how much profit they are making?

Flippa is not a public company. The only thing you can be doing is making a somewhat educated guess about their sales numbers.

There is no way you have even the slightest idea of their expenses which you would need to know how much profit they are making.

It's not hard to calculate the amount of listings they get per day, the amount of people who feature per day, along with the sales in the past 7 days which is clearly shown in the public, which they take 5% of in their success fees.

My point is its unethical of them to make this change without a courtesy letter or even an email notification, blog post, or whatever to notify the sellers. This is the 2nd time in the past 3 months Flippa has made changes to its pricing structure to try to get more money out of sellers.

My point is that you made no mention of their expenses. They are not running that business without incurring some expenses. You have no idea of what all those expenses are or how much they total.

All you can do is make a somewhat educated guess of how much they take in from sales. Sales do not equal profit.

As pointed out - you have no idea of the costs involved in running the business and the website so you have no knowledge of the actual profits from that business. When a business becomes "the" place to go for a specific service or product - increasing the price structure is not unusual.

You are using the term "unethical" in a way that makes no sense. If I own a business I have the right to increase my prices. If you object to the prices, you can advertise your sites for sale elsewhere and refuse to use Flippa. Advance notification wouldn't change anything and could result in an overload of new listings with people trying to beat a price change date.

the thing is, if it's your own company then you can do whatever you like with it. You don't have to tell anyone you're increasing your prices. I would. But not everyone is like me.

Furthermore, I don't believe there's anything unethical about raising prices. Companies do it all the time.

You have choices. You can either pay the new prices, take your business elsewhere, or create a competing site .

Personally, I'd love to see a great site that can compete with Flippa.

Well, now you know a niche that makes way too much money. Just put up a competing site, charge half as much, and you'll have it made. Aren't you glad you found out about that?

Those prices are not crazy if you are listing legit sites that have legit traffic and are making money. The prices sellers get for those sites easily allows them to pay to get access to such a huge marketplace.

flippa has grown and a big part of what you are paying for with the listing fees is access to their marketplace of buyers. They have more buyers so now they can charge more... pretty much business 101.

This really only seriously affects those who have made a business out of selling sites to others. A good percentage of those are not the most quality sites or transparent listings. No harm really done to the core of flippa's customers.

I just hope it cuts down on the number of garbage sites/domains that you have to sift through to find something decent. The hike isn't that high, and it seems like it will hurt new sites more than established ones.

This is getting even more unethical. Someone mentioned about the fee increase as a comment on Flippa's facebook profile, and they removed his post (As facebook page admins can remove comments) without responding to it. They are evidently trying to hide this.

    Hi all.

Can confirm we've recently adjusted the listing fee - the first time since Flippa started over 3 years ago and something clearly displayed to all sellers as part of the listing creation process.

In the last 3 years, we've implemented industry-leading features such as Google Analytics and Google Adsense verification, advanced search functionality, escrow integration, listing syndication to our partner sites and tools and, most recently, the introduction of proxy bidding. In parallel, we've increased our customer support team to cover weekends and reduced our response time by 50%.

To this end, we continue to get a record number of sellers along with the most qualified and active buyers anywhere. Be assured we're not now sitting idle - we still have a load of amazing features still coming through later this year.

The main reason that we didn't do our standard blog announcement for this change is that it only impacts sellers who start as listing this week - sellers are made aware of it at checkout which is arguably the point at which it matters. Blog posts go to everyone: buyers, sellers, and everyone in between.

Any price adjustment is only relevant to sellers at the point of listing and this is where the new pricing is displayed (email was not really a strong option here as we have no way of identifying which users are about to create a listing). Apologies if this came across as silence on our part as this was not the intent. Not sure what was being referred to wrt our facebook page but I've just come from posting this there too ...

shame they cant have different price points ie $19 fee for site worth upto $100 and $29 for ones over $100 or something like that.

They also put their success fee up to a min of $10 so now for every site you sell you are out $39 before you start making a profit

Don't forget about the Warrior Forum - Complete Sites for Sale section. It was actually created in response to the Flippa switching from Sitepoint marketplace and raising their prices the first go round.

You can still use escrow simply by going to escrow.com and submitting the transaction and when you post in Complete Sites for Sale for $20 it stays on the front page for a few days at no additional cost, and it only costs another $20 to bump it when it reaches the third page.

So people who want an alternative without paying $29 + success fees + what is it - $79 now for featured, use the WF. It's become a really busy section.

    Hello,

I've just advertised one of my Website Traffic resellers site, I never even noticed the price increase. I just paid the advertising fee, from the sites profit for June.

Maybe I should read how much I'm paying before hitting the payment button.

No ... actually, they'll just make a lot more money from the junk sellers. The junk sellers are the ones who will stay, along with the very high end sellers.

      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...00-flippa.html

Flippa is overrun with people who just sell one cloned turnkey (as in ZERO traffic and ZERO sales) site after another. They use shill bidding to get on the Most Active tab and sell this worthless junk to newbies who don't know any better. They're very good at what they do and another $10 isn't going to deter them in any way.

Most Flippa alternatives are a joke. They are just cookie cutter Flippa clone scripts. I also think the silent price increase is unprofessional. I honestly didnt even notice because I was used to the $19 and I saw the "9" in 29.

Also, has anyone checked their bank statements? They actually charge $29.23 but all the receipts they email only say $29....They dont make any mention of the extra .23 cents anywhere. Is it tax or what? I'm going to go dispute this with my CC company because contacting Flippa is just useless. They pick and choose what they want to respond to. Basically, if you are complaining about something, they will ignore you.

I believe that until Flippa Cleans up the mess they have on there with regard to all the game playing that is going on, and if your a serious user on flippa you know what I am talking about, shills, bots, questionable domain names, unrealistic income claims, and a host of other very questionable practices the value of the service is in doubt.

In any business the more you make from your clients and vendors the higher your profits are, this is why Ebay became such a success, initially it was very cheap to list, however they changed the model over time it is still not a bad marketplace, but they really changed it up and so caused a ripple in the market.

Flippa is in a place where they should be at a $9.95 listing with a membership fee for sellers, who are serious about selling on flippa, the idea of increasing the listing fee tells me one thing they are not as successful as they want you to believe.

They are not allegedly well managed or even organized in a meaningful way.

Over all the word I would use to describe the company at this time would be Dubious.

We use Flippa all the time, not much lately tho, but yeah I think the price increase is to filter all those awful sites being listed and all those outsourcing websites that sell for a few bucks.

I like Flippa for the most part but it's definitely worrisome that they are raising their fees so much, so quickly. It is a large marketplace with lots of buyers but unless you purchase the front page upgrade many auctions end up getting relatively few listing views.

I see more and more quality sellers moving over to doing private sales off of their own websites and lists, so they can avoid Flippa altogether. That trend should increase greatly I think. Also, it's only a matter of time until 1 or more serious competitors show up to give Flippa some real competition.

I would LOVE to see a well-managed auction site that's focused on lower-end sites in the $150-$700 range. The key to success would be to keep fees low but also keep crappy spam site listings to a minimum!

I think Flippa are going to over-step the mark very soon.

People were already pissed when they increased the minimum success fee and that was only a $5 increase.

They do seem to be getting quite greedy. If you don't have a high-end website to sell then basically you can f*** off is what they're saying!

Of course they are a business and there to make money but getting greedy is good for no person or business and it'll bite then on the ass sooner or later. Probably sooner too at the rate they're increasing their fees...

The price increase ain't gonna deter those junk sellers. Better make it $100 or more per listing so that most (not all) listings will be those of quality websites. But the dilemma is that if Flippa raises the listing fee too high, people will start looking for cheaper alternatives.

If you post here about it (bumping an old thread) - contact Flippa a time or two - read the replies here and then complain to your credit card provider....you might get the .23 cents back. Or you might find it's some tiny fee or something was pro-rated and get nothing back.

After all that time spent - you might have .23 cents. Cost/benefit analysis on that doesn't compute.
