I think IM is going to overtake the general shopping world.
People go online more and more everyday to buy things.
Big Business are already hurt by the IM world.
I think that it will do just fine in five years. It will thrive.

I agree for the entire IM community. What about from an individual perspective? Don't you think competition will hurt everyone?

Individually, not so much. I feel like it will all be monopolized by websites like Amazon and Overstock. There will always be a chance to thrive though, unless Google suddenly decides it hates everyone and only ranks Amazon and the like.:p

If you think competition will hurt you, you need a better model - quick! They've done more for building my list, improving my bottom line, AND improving my sales funnel than anything else I can think of!

I think google will be less important in 5 years when it comes to driving traffic to your sites. Social Media will be even more important. The market will growth even more and competition will be bigger but as there are more people on the internet and even more people BUYING on the internet, this shouldn't have a negative effect on IM.

LOL. Good one. You could I suppose. As far as what it will look like in five years, I just think it will be commonplace that people can buy things online. I also think the market may gradually become more competitive and marketers will have to find new niches that have not been filled.

The 5% will move to mobile and will be making really good money, while customers will be happy as mistrust grows in major corporations.

Meanwhile, the 95% will continue to spam the internet with SEO techniques they believe are great but are in fact pretty much spam. There will be a massive amount of useless information appearing everyday, only to be deindexed a day later as Google's new algorithm change coupled with an enlarged human team moves into hyperspeed to keep their customers happy.

Oh, and there will be a lot more IMers. Or at least people who think they are :p

I think there will be a move towards marketing in the app store. Already you see people like John Reese transitioning to that space.

5 Years from now, every thing will be voice command

Think of Siri, but 1000x smarter. You can simply said "I want the best Apple on California" and it will give you the location, price and available quantity before you decide to purchase.

    Just my imagination...

The weight-loss niche will double as Man vs. Food becomes a natural way of life- in turn this will bump up the (un)healthly, (un)fitness, and (un)happy niches - a rosy future indeed for marketers in general.

I think government would definitely put a crimp into IM, some stupid laws would be reality. And yes, IM would be 70% mobile, also we would have 3D tv without glasses era - so I would look in this direction.

by 2020, 90% of the U.S. economy will be based on one dollar articles and people spamming Warrior Forum with affiliate links.

I think it will look pretty much the same in 5 years. 5 years is too short of a time frame for massive change. Now 6 years on the other hand, it will be completely different. People will be typing on their air keyboards, ads will change automatically based on the personality profile of the user, google will merge with facebook and become goobook.

Lot's of changes coming in 6 years. But not a whole lot in 5.

The basics of marketing has and will always be the same the next 200 years as has been the past 200 years, remember Dan kennedy does not do Internet marketing but still gets paid for people learning about internet marketing, provide great value, treat customers well and connect with them and provide solutions... Internet is just another medium, just like mobile apps will be and god knows what other new ones come out in 5 years.... after all apple came out with their BIG HEAVY ipod only 8 years or so back and now have changed the game..... but with more technology the only issue will be more distraction of the new mediums, as long the fundamentals are tied in every one will do good after all the customers will always be human's lookingn for solutions .....

This true. Unless people's DNA change, marketing will not change.

I actually know how it will be...

    Dear Journal,

Food supplies have run out. Google's spiders have found all of the safe houses, there is no way to reach any supply stores. Alexa went mad, and ran straight into Spammer fire screaming about article syndication. Group morale is low. The remaining Warriors look to Allen for advice. What he says makes sense; but he is usually quiet and distant. Nothing new there. I happened upon a small stream today, the water seemed drinkable. Before I could fill my canteen, a crazed man jumped at me and said "$97! But wait, before you walk away! I'll take off ten dollars and throw in my 50 day email marketing course!"

I didn't drink, and I fear I may be going insane. Oh, and the velociraptors attacked again.

      This!

And... the Google spiders will have defeated the evil Facebook stopping contact with the rest of the survivors.

As I have more than 9 years making a living online, I really think we will have more tools and more resources but the good marketing its evergreen.

We sell stuff to people and people have the same problems and the same obsessions, our work it's always to reach them, create value to them and selling them good quality products to resolve their necessities.

It will be bye bye to Brick and Mortar stores. The only thing left in city centres and shopping malls will be specialist stores, bars and restaurants. Google will still be strong but Facebook will be overtaken by a new fad!

I would say FB will still be around since they can gobble up other companies, not the other way around.

The whole of the net will be owned by Apple and Amazon - so if you don't have stakes in the app store or are part of Amazon's infrastructure you will be splattered!!

    Maybe??
