My Squidoo Lens: 18 Days to a Top 100 Category Ranking

I'm a Squidoo newbie. I published my first lens less than 3 weeks ago
and today it reached the rank of #73 in its category. Overall it ranks
at #718 of almost 900,000 lenses.

i'm just starting my first Lens right now and I have never even been to squidoo.com before.

Are there any tricks I should know? I'm just gonna start writing. Obviously my lens should link to my site, but should I put any links to my Lens from other sites/articles?

I have several Squidoo Lens, so I know how it feels to up in the 100s! Congrats on your accomplishment!!!

Keep update as often as you can, as from what I understand, this will keep your rating up. I've been neglecting mine, and had two drop from the 100s spot to WAY down.

BTW end the "fresh squid contest". I did and got 3rd!!!!

Your lense rank has been kinda jumpy starting at 1800 at the start of this week and then decreasing only to then shoot up to 2600 and then finnally go back down to its current position.

Just make sure you keep your lense updated and keep that traffic flowing and you should improve your rankings.

Your lense photo file name needs changing to your lense keyphrase.

Plus you need to use all 40 tags to make sure you get the most insider squidoo traffic which will mean your lense climbs its rankings on autopilot and you get free backlinks too from other lenses.

Finnally look at getting backlinks from more places than just the two current places... your doing great but you can easily get top 50 of your category by tommorow just by doing these small easy changes.

Hope this information helps i did have a WSO all about squidoo and helped get loads of people to the top 100 in their category using WH strategy's and it seems your doing great and have a good grasp of it already.

You can do lots of cool things with HTML and CSS on a Squidoo lens that can make your page look awesome (AND stand out from the crowd).

I started by looking at many lenses to get ideas on how I might want to present my information. I also soaked up lenses that explained various ways to enhance a Squidoo page by applying HTML and CSS.

In addition to using basic SEO guidelines on the lens itself, my only promotional tools so far have been forum postings, articles and updating the content.

About the G Slap...I heard that they (Squidoo) did kind of "loose favor" with Google for a while because all of the crap that was showing up in searches, riding on the back of Squidoo's authority site status.

It looks as though everything is back to normal though. Do a search (Google) on just about any major topic that you can think of, and you'll usually see a Lens or 2 on the first page of the SERPS.

There's a lot of people making a ton of money using Squidoo. Some using only Squidoo, some (like me), using Squidoo as part of article marketing.

That was July 2007 - old news! Squidoo cleaned up their lenses, and got back into Google's good books.

Since then Squidoo's been gone strength to strength, adding new modules and improving the interface.

Really nicely put together lens and very informative which is always a good thing! The approach you have taken and the obvious effort you have put in should be a model for others. All too often people throw some content onto a Squidoo lens with little thought for how it looks and then come moaning that it isn't doing anything - your lens is the absolute opposite.

I will let you on a little secret on how to get your lens in the top 10 of it's category... Get traffic! It's as simple. Here are some stats from a lens of mine that was #1 in SEO and Marketing category:



... the more traffic it gets the higher it ranks.
However, I do not care much where it ranks within Squidoo, I care about where it ranks on Search Engines

And if you did, did it make you any money? I just wanted to gauge the effectiveness of internal Squidoo traffic as opposed to outside sources.

This is an interesting thread. I have made a few lenses but get zero traffic on the majority of them. I have one that gets a few hits per week and that is either just luck or b/c it has the most content (I think).

I'm always surprised when I hear about people making money with squidoo. Luckily my main purpose is links b/c otherwise I'm not doing so well.

I have 2 lenses that are currently in the top 100 overall and in the top 5 of their own categories... I do not see much traffic coming from Squidoo itself though. Sure, there is some, but not much at all.

ast week i made my first lens and two days after it got published it was ranked #52 in seo and affiliate. all i did was post on the squidu forum to tell them about my article and it got some clicks each day and 7 5 star ratings, 5 favorites, and 5 comments. also a really long lens really lets you easily rank high. im on the second paage for the category seo

One thing to remember i that Google rarely shows more than two Squidoo lenses for any search term. No matter how good your lens is, what you need to do is outrank the top two lenses from Squidoo in G.

Now, if you simply cannot seem to break into the Google rankings for your lens with the name of the product, you may be able to break in using an extra keyword. For example: In promoting a Clickbank product, the two most common extra keywords to include in your title are "bonus" and "review".

Granted, by getting a product name to show with the keywords "product name-review" the traffic will be diminished by perhaps half--but it is still better to show for a longer keyword mix than not to show at all.

Another thing to note about Squidoo, as Alex Sol mentioned above, is that getting the #1 ranking for your keyword in Squidoo rankings does not always mean you will outperform other lenses ranked below you in Squidoo when it comes to Google rankings. Squidoo and Google look for different things. I would always try to optimize my lens more for Google than for Squidoo.
