Megauploads Search Warrants Thrown Out

Here is the bigger issue ...

It is a common question whether those outside of the US need to comply with US law. If you are selling to US customers the FTC will come after you. Even if you are not, having a .com domain or US hosting could lead to US enforcement action as seen in the megauploads case.

There was a story this week about US government agents trolling the web looking for a wide variety of products to buy. One happened to be a controlled substance in the US sold online by someone in Pakistan. The Pakistani is now in jail in California, using an interpreter, and undoubtedly facing a long prison sentence at US taxpayer expense.

Perhaps I have missed the news, but this seems to be a one-way street of US litigation and I have not seen other countries extraditing US citizens for violations of their laws.

Best practice for your website:

1. Always comply with your local laws.

2. Be aware of US law and your risk factors.
