There Are NO Profitable Niches!

One of the more popular questions that comes up on this forum is "what are the most profitable niches?"

To which, people throw out things like forex, dating, weight loss, etc.

Got a clue for you, people. None of those niches are profitable. None. Zero.

Please hear me out before you call the guys in the white coats to come and take me away.

All of those markets, niches, and many, many more have characteristics that lend themselves to making a profit.

They have large enough numbers of people interested in them. Many of those interested have money and have demonstrated a willingness to spend it on that interest. All of those markets and niches within those markets have multiple ways to place an offer in front of the people ready to spend money.

But simply possessing those characteristics does not make them profitable.

Only you can make them profitable.

You have to connect with the humans in that marketplace, and make them an offer they're willing to give up money to accept. And you have to do it often enough, with a great enough margin, to reach your own financial goals. Once they accept your offer, you have to deliver enough value that they allow you to keep their money. Even better if they feel slightly guilty for getting the better end of the bargain.

For you, any niche where you can accomplish the above is a profitable niche. Any niche where you cannot, isn't.

Bottom line, it isn't the niche that's profitable. It's doing the right things to provide value to the people within the niche at the right price that's profitable.

Great point. I see way to many people looking for the "magic niche" instead of learning the repeatable skills necessary. Thanks for the thought.

Very well made point. You as a marketer really do make the niche work. Many people fail in the well known niches and many succeed in the exact same niches! So, it proves it's about the marketer and their own strategy, how they talk to their audience and their consistency.

Yes, you have to connect with the humans in the marketplace.
Emotions play a huge role in good conversion rates.

      Exactly John!

It seems as though that should be completely understood, but yet overlooked by many.

I like to say the secret is in the sauce.

The secret ingredient in the recipe for the best selling hot sauce is always you. Success depends on whether that secret ingredient is hot or not. Without you being on fire, your sauce is just another lumpy bland tomato sauce among many.

I agree with what is said here by the OP, however for the average competent IM'er aren't the odds of making money higher when entering markets that are bigger in size? or where there are a wider selection of products?

If you are unable to write engaging content, then it doesn't matter how big the niche is. You'll make a sale every now and then, but you'll miss the vast majority of business.

You have to engage the reader. Bring out their emotions while slowly pushing their emotional buttons that will automatically build their trust in you and create the desire to buy your product or service.

The best sales letter I have ever read wasn't a sales letter. It was a 1500 word article that told one hell of an engaging story and had me pulling out my credit card by the end. It was awesome.

Good point John, but it doesn't make the question defunct.

You may know that a market should have enough online traffic with proven buyers, but many newbies don't. So, they might go down several blind alleys in niches which are were never likely to be profitable in the first place, no matter how engaging the content.

        Cheers,

Good post John. I do agree with you. Only you can make a niche profitable and there is no such thing as a "magic niche" that will make you a millionaire. Would be nice if there was though!

That is so true. It is not the niche itself. You need to find a right angle to market within that niche.

Logic would lead you to that conclusion, but 'tain't necessarily so.

By all accounts, the dating market has a lot of money to be made. Yet I would flounder trying to sell 'pickup artist' info to twenty-somethings. I'm in my fifties and married to the same woman for 30+ years, so I'm completely out of touch with that market.

The odds of making money go up when you can connect with a market in a way that generates a 'know, like and trust' response.

              Thanks for weighing in...

True, Gordon. But it doesn't change my premise. As I alluded to above, some markets may be very lucrative for some people and a complete waste of resources for others.

Better to teach how to recognize a potential blind alley - the niche that will likely never be profitable - and avoid it. Once you eliminate the sinkholes, then the newbie can learn to sort through what's left to find the markets and niches within markets that newbie has a chance in.

It isn't the niche that profitable. All any niche can represent is potential. There's no profit until you get an exchange of value.

Newbies just need to ask the question a little differently. Instead of 'what are the most profitable niches', it should be 'how do I find a niche I can profit in'...

Thanks to Gordon and everyone else that added their thoughts. Makes it fun, don't it?

    Great post John.

That's why we see all these marketing 'gurus' (god I hate that word) who are in Real Estate, Dating, Natural Health, Weight Loss etc in addition to their IM businesses. They've got the skills to make things happen, then they apply them to many different markets.

Get the skills and any niche can pay your bills

John, you're right on the money. People should be asking themselves...

"Which niche markets contain the largest amount of people buying information?"

    or

"Which niche markets contain the largest amount of people paying the most for information?"

Which are a good start. The next question has to be "Can I connect with these people easily enough and often enough?"

    Perfect, just perfect!

Your post is very true. It's the value that you bring to the niche that will make you profitable. All niche, even small ones can be profitable if you know how to bring value to it.

I think that the most profitable niche out there is the home business online network marketing niche. There are so many people looking for opportunities all the time and it never saturates because 100,000's of people do a search for a biz opportunity every single week.

Think about that. You just have to position yourself in front of as many of these people as possible.

I think a lot of people are interested in the type of biz but will overlook it because of it being everywhere, so they have already seen so many different type of opportunities and are going to be like "ehhhh". However, like the thread starter brilliantly stated you have to make them interested in your offer and completely sell them over. So many people slanging the same thing, but how can you make the best presentation and best offer?

Curtis, I'm blushing over the 'brilliant' remark. Risking my brilliance, there's another question to ask.

"Am I the right person to be making that best presentation and best offer? Or could my creativity and efforts be better served elsewhere?"

In the 'right' niche for you, the answers will be Yes and No. In that order.

    Hi John,

Well said: "Only you can make them profitable."

And, if you've a clear direction, an attainable goal, a feasible plan and you do the necessary actions every day, then many niches can be profitable for you.

Such threads can be a powerful motivational device for people to begin to understand what the iron filings feel near a magnet.

    Cheers,

    Sandor

I can see where John is going with this, but there is nothing like having someone doing the initial footwork for us. Think about how much harder it would be if we came on the net and didn't have a clue as to what was selling.
