This guy has figured out how to make serious money on Fiverr

I have to hand it to nathanshields. He's figured out how to mine Fiverr gold.

Nathanshields will send you a concept sketch for a speed drawing for $5, only on fiverr.com

He does rather elaborate speed drawing videos. The deal is this: You write a script, you get someone to edit it, you get someone (Fiverr seller) to record the audio.

Then you pay $5 for a preliminary sketch, and a $50 non-refundable deposit.

Once you approve the sketch, the video is $400 per minute in b/w, $500 per minute in color. You get a low-res version of the video to approve. If you don't like it, you get a refund.

Nathan is a stay-at-home dad with a couple of toddlers, so I figure he can knock out one complete video a day. What would you do for $400-500 a day?

That's an interesting one. I love the way that he upsells
from the initial $5 to $400 per minute! This may not fit
every market but it surely got me thinking of Fiverr in
a different way. I guess you also have to be a top
seller to get the $50 extra level.

Pretty competitive price actually... a lot of these whiteboard animation companies charge $500+ per minute

Worth it IMO if you're in the right niche and have the budget... these types of videos have TONS more engagement value

Thanks a great idea! I know Truth About Abs switched to a sales video using speed drawing on a white board and it sent sales sky high. I might keep it in mind for a product launch. Thanks again.

Truth About Abs already converted very well, but the whiteboard animation definitely improved conversions. Still, this style of animation is not for everyone, as the top companies who produce these kinds of videos charge $1,000/minute for the video itself, and that doesn't usually include the script.

Wow, that claymation was awesome...very professionally done! I'm really happy he's getting a lot of orders; being a stay at home dad, that's brave.

I've been thinking of using Fiverr that way too; I do have some PLR gigs up there. Anyway, thanks for sharing this.

That's a really nice gig, he must be making an awful lot of money doing that!

  • Love the claymation! I wonder how he does that. For sure he is really very good at what he is doing. Videos are great to take away boredom from visitors. Super cool! Great way to earn money as well.

How does he collect payment for the $400 or $500, a bunch of $50 payments?

Great way to use Fiverr, although the commission to Fiverr would be outrageous.

I'm waiting on confirmation from Fiverr, but I think $50 is the largest upsell amount you can use. (Of course you have to be at the right level to upsell.) And you only have three slots on your gig for upsells.

It seems to me that if you're spending that much money on a video you should spend a little more and get a great script written. Opportunity here for copywriters who can throw in a few jokes.

$1 out of $5 doesn't sound bad, but once you get to $100 out of $500 you've got to be seriously asking yourself if there's a better way.

I'd try to buy speedwriting.com (it's for sale!) and build a brand.

He's also got a math blog:

Check out the fractal pancakes -- amazing.

I don't get the impression that he is getting payment for the
upsell through Fiverr. If he is then he is really losing a lot
of money. I think the payment information is to let the
buyer know what the final product would cost.

Wow, what a great share. He found a gig that makes some serious cash, and does really nice work.
He is almost up to 450 gigs ordered! Even if you just 300 x 450 that comes out to $135,000! All from staying at home.

That's crazy $400 per minute, I don't know if he is making real dough, but I do believe this is crazy, if he is doing some serious money, my hats off to the seller. I do think in provide legitimate value and charge accordingly. I don't know if a that is worth $400 per minute.

    • Update: Nathan found this thread on the WF and wanted to respond to some of the questions. (Apparently he can't post here.)

I started out doing a lot of time-intensive gigs on fiverr (like the claymation you posted), and gradually became a top-rated seller. The custom speed drawing gig emerged as people showed interest in some of the drawing videos I had made.

The $400-500 per minute price is still competitive for this medium (and fiverr takes 20%), but I can't really crack one out in a day; as someone posted. There's quite a lot of work that goes into production, but it's nice to be able to do it at home and around my kids' schedules.

Payment is accepted through Fiverr. I've made $20k so far, which means they've made $5k from me. However, their site is not designed to process large payments, and customers frequently complain about having to place 10 orders to pay $1000, since PayPal often freezes their accounts for a day. I have complained to Fiverr about the need for higher-valued gig extras - no luck so far.

Nathan's the real deal: This summer he accepted the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science teaching.

Now go forth and create your own future!

Nathan really should either design his own website or hire someone too now that he is getting his name out there with Fiverr. He is already list building with the gigs (if not he should start collecting names) and then start contacting them and then passing his name to friends and contacts as well. I wouldn't be going against Fiverrs TOS and it would put a lot more money in his pocket. Go Single Dad!!

He's actually not a single dad. His wife was working while they were in Saipan.

But I agree with you -- I think he should buy a domain and set up a site. He's got a fantastic story. The press releases practically write themselves.

Fiverr has hinted vaguely that they have something more in the works, perhaps another site where the dollar amounts are higher.

Just as it was mentioned above, it's against FIVERR's terms to make contact or request payment off of the site, therefore I have to believe he's paying the 20%. I'm sure the way he looks at it is - there is a marketplace for his particular service and if he can sell it at the price he wants, then 80% of something is far better than 100% of nothing. The market comes to him - he doesn't have to go and find it.
