How to charge $0.05 to $0.20 per word for your writing...

I recently met a guy who is earning $0.05 to $0.20 per word for his articles and he is not even a native english speaker.

Here's his game plan open for exploitation by you and me!

1. Identify a product or services company which is doing well and is innovative. Identify their competitors as well. These companies should be in the niche you know something about or at least have an interest in.

2. Gain knowledge in the niche by reading a lot of books and blogs.

3. Write articles and post it as guest posts in the general blogs in that niche.

4. Develop a page for marketing yourself and have links to all the guest posts you have done. (Do not have a blog and post article on your own. Posting your articles in other blogs makes you an authority because it shows that your article is good enough to be accepted in the other reputable blogs). Having own blog is optional.

5. Contact the companies and offer to be their freelance blogger. If you have a good resume then they are sure to hire you. Every company is looking to expand their horizons through content marketing.

As an exclusive freelance blogger for that company, you can easily command higher rates than the industry standard. They will keep paying you well as long as they are getting new customers from the content marketing.

Since most of the time these companies already spend heavily on marketing and branding, their domain will have a good PR and the blog readership will go up immediately. The success of the blog will not be just because of your nice articles but also because of their existing foundation of traffic, branding and high PR aged domain. But the company will think the success of their blog and the new flow of customers is just because of you!

It takes time to strike a good deal but once you get one, it is hard not to make a descent living by writing.

You have some good ideas in here, however, something I'm confused about is this...

You say that following these instructions you can charge $.05 to $.20 per word for your writing. Then you say that you can command higher rates than the industry standard.

For this type of writing the 'industry standard' is going to often be much higher than this. You're thinking the common $.01 per word that you see advertised around here is the industry standard, but you are wrong. A good writer should get $.20 per word (and much more) when writing this type of content.

I agree 100% These days I reserve my paid writing for a handful of longtime clients and over the years our payment structure has evolved to "per job" rather than "per word." In short, I write the necessary amount of words to complete the assignment.

Sometimes that's just 800 words; on other occasions it may extend to 1,200 words or more.

I charge these clients between $200 and $350 per assignment. A significant part of that price depends upon the amount of research necessary, but because I've worked for them for years and know their subjects, research is usually minimal.

The person Deepak "interviewed" was probably a top end writer in the IM niche. That would look to be about the ceiling in the absolute best case scenario. It's either that or he didn't really interview anyone and made this up. Who knows.

I consider that more than the industry standard for a non native English speaker. That's about the ceiling from what I have seen in my country.

Interviewed or not, it's still sound advice that will help writers looking for a new angle. So many writers think they're stuck at that $.01-$.02 rate when that's really the worst case scenario.

All you have to do is find the right market - there's a lot of room to play with rates between $.01 and $.20, and businesses who will gladly pay at each tier.

Well the most important thing of getting paid a lot of money for writing is you have to actually be able to write good. Once you write well enough, you go to websites/blogs that you want to write for and send them your writing samples and other credentials that make you qualified to write on their site.

Honestly, being a writer is a lot like trying to get a job. You just have to build yourself up until you have the credentials to get bigger and better jobs.
