It's Time For Yahoo To Step Up

I swear, they must feel like the poor orphan child with the mind of a genius
that nobody wants.

After reading about the Google lawsuit (when has anybody sued Yahoo?) I
can't help but wonder what's keeping Yahoo from giving Google some real
competition.

Their Alexa rank is 2, right behind Google.

Have you ever been to the Yahoo site and actually taken a look around?

If you compare THEIR home page to Google's, there is no comparison. Yahoo
has it all over them in spades.

And finding Yahoo's services?

A piece of cake. They've got an index that puts Google's to shame.

And then of course there's the pay per click costs which are so much
lower than Google's.

Did you know that in February of this year, Yahoo got over 17% of the
search traffic? Sure, it's nowhere near Google's 72%, but it's not chump
change either...and it could be better if Yahoo just got off their butts
and did some major promoting.

I'm no marketing genius and I don't have the answers.

But...I know somebody here does.

So let's have it.

What does Yahoo have to do to overtake the big G?

Certainly we have some brilliant minds here who can think of something.

I wouldn't agree with that - if I want to find something then I'm going to get annoyed if I have to wait for a load of stuff to load that I don't want. The google homepage is great, it has just what I want.

They're search engines, surely you can just use the search function if you want to find their products and services.

I also find google gets better results.

Yahoo actually has about 20% of the US search market and the economic and finance news that dominates the spectrum helps them a lot as people see them as the No. 1 finance portal in the world.

Look I want Yahoo to remain as a viable 2nd option to Google as it will help both companies and consumers in the long run with better innovations.

    Fire Yahoo's under-performing staff. Poach Google's over-performing staff.

    Really very simple.

    Seriously though...

This discussion often comes up during mastermind sessions I've had with friends etc.

    Here's my view...

Google is smarter. How come? Simple. They market each service they offer on its own strength. They huff and puff about every new service separate from the rest. They force you to give your full attention to each service based on its own strength. The only link their services have is the visible name Google or G-this or G-that.

Yahoo is a crowd pleaser which automatically weakens their pitches. They offer everything you could ever need in one place. So, your attention is often divided and it weakens their pitches for the other stuff that's great, too. They don't have the real pulse of the market either when it comes to marketing. Google always knows what to say to make you want their products and they often seem to know what you want before you even want it. That's why Google's search engine was such a hit. Yahoo is an old dog that can't seem to learn new tricks.

Like I said, maybe they should fire their staff and poach Google's. Sorry couldn't resist.

It does seem their only way out doesn't it?

I am not so sure that Google is as great as people make out. It dominates almost completely in many markets globally but still it is their core Search business which is enhancing the rest of their offerings. None of their other products as good as they are like GMail or YouTube, etc. are really making them money.

I actually like Google better- I like the simplicity and I can find what I am searching for easier.

But I agree that Yahoo should be able to figure out a way to catch up and take back more of the market.

What's wrong with being number 2?

Two is darn good... and yes, One is supposedly best

    but

to some Yahoo is No. 1
to some Google is No. 1

and then there are those who think neither ranks for that top position.

I think I'll go now; I'm trying to solve a bigger problem.

when google first came out, it was way better then the others.. 10 years ago, the search engines where REALLY bad, and ssssllllooowwwwww. But that simply is not the case anymore. I think Google is coasting on their reputation and momentum.

I think Google has a lot going for them with their "brand". Everybody knows who google is, computer smart or not.

I also agree that it would be terrible of google gained a monopoly on searches, they are already so close already! It is very healthy for us that there are still multiple search engines, and I sure hope it stays that way.

    Waggers... here's why Google wins..

K.I.S.S. ... I don't have to explain what that means...

People who go online searching for stuff.. don't want the news, the weather, the ads, the Yahoo chat crap..

That is interruption marketing at it's most destructive... Google gives the surfer the ability to get/do EXACTLY what they want, no distractions... Yahoo will never snatch that.. although there are times where I use Yahoo PPC instead of Google..

    Peace

    And finding Yahoo's services?

    A piece of cake.
You should try finding their customer support services some time in the business center...

    "A piece of c&%$."

The only thing I like about yahoo is Yahoo IM. I love it except that the archive is not searchable.

I use google far more than yahoo. Its far easier to navigate, far easier to use and the google services are just out of this world compared to yahoo. But Yahoo IM is an important business tool for me.

Asking when yahoo is going to overtake google is kindof silly if you ask me since many of Google's various services are newer than Yahoo's offerings, like their gmail, and they quickly gobble up market share. Yahoo leads in some areas still but Google is like a runaway train.

Check out who google thinks in #1 when you type in the word "search" into google search: http://www.google.com/search?q=search

Not long ago msn dominated that spot :-)

Also not long ago msn was #1 in alexa.

If anyone should be worried its microsoft...

They look a little like AOL in that they have to bundle themselves with the ISPs to stay on the map and are dropping fast.

Personally I pay extra to my isp just for the privilege of not having msn "live" as my isp.

From what I hear, Yahoo is about to take social networking to a whole notha level and integrate every property they own.

That should create an insane amount of traffic.

I hate Yahoo's interface for searching.

If I am searching for something I don't want to be slapped in the face with irrelevant ad or the latest scandal involving Paris Hilton. I just wanna search.

Google only displays ads when it has some idea what I am search for. Brilliant.
