New Site - What do I do with Webmaster Tools?

Hello,

I have a new website that is almost ready to go live. What do I need to do with the Google Webmaster Tools? I am not sure how or what to do....all I know is that I keep hearing that I need it.

    Are you signed up with google? Do that first then the following:

    First thing I normally do on Webmaster Tools is make sure both www dot mydomainname dot com and mydomainname.com are both added and then set the one without the www. as the preferred domain. Next I link it to my Google Analytics for the website. After that submit your sitemap.

    There is a lot you can do with Webmaster Tools. Play around with it and read the "help" pages.
