Low conversions, is this topic too taboo?

Just started inviting some friends to check out my new site:
FREE: IM Dirty Little Secrets, Tricks and Tactics that the Internet Marketing Gurus are using now.

Usually my squeeze pages get 40% or better, but this one is converting much lower.

Wondering if its the topic, ebook image, video, or use of facebook connect to signup thats hindering conversions? or combination?

Thoughts?

David, what's the conversion rate for this one?

You might want to add "header" to your poll. I think you should remove it and up everything else. On my laptop I don't see your optin button without scrolling down (1366 * 768)

I personally don't want to use unethical or illegal methods in my marketing. I'm all about transparency, honesty and respect.

I don't know the content of your report but maybe the cover is a little bit too aggressive. Both in the colors you chose and in the wording.

Excellent points. Will tone down language on the ebook cover.

Thought the forbidden fruit angle might do well, but looking like its too strong or poorly executed...

There are a few design issues. Try to establish more of a page flow. Look at introducing a heading, change your bullets to ticks or something less neutral, remove the white background from the second report image and make the blue typeface in the header more readable (kerning and colours).

Basically, do more to instill confidence in that initial 3 second impact.

The fact that I had to use my FB to sign in. I do a lot of 'Net surfing from work, and my office has a firewall in place that blocks both Facebook & YouTube. I couldn't watch the video nor sign in to get your offer.

Your opt-in thing was also off-screen when the page loads...I had to scroll down to see it.

Maybe you could use another sign in than facebook. I have facebook, like most others, but I really don't want to associate my account with anything else, than people I know. I prefer the normal squeeze opt-in-box (to an auto responder). Of course you need to place it over the fold

Eh, I don't care to sign up with my Facebook account almost anywhere. Not that I'm trying to hide anything, but rather its more of a privacy issue for me.

Change your opt-in to a normal name and email addy, and I bet your conversions increase two-fold.

Taking off Facebook Login will help , Simple email only option above the fold and ecover change to be more personal ... and yes video (either do a full screencast or full motion video, video with your photo does not seem to be very catchy, just my 2 cents)

I don't mind people using a FB login, but it looks like from yours you have to click to an unknown number of screens. When I use FB logins, I make sure that it is the auto-populated version from Aweber, where it just makes life simple one click to sign up. Yours scares me or what is to come.

You have a picture of a thief on the top, and *then* you ask for a *facebook* login with peoples personal information, relationships, and so forth, who has also known to unethically 'share' information?

No way I'd sign up for it, and I'd be surprised if you got *any* signups...

Most buyers now realize that sellers are using deceptive captions to attract them. For example, you see something which says " is such and such a program a scam?" and you honestly think you are going to get a straightforward answer only to find that that advertiser is an affiliate of that product and is basically telling you it is not a scam so buy from them. Another commonly used deception is that of reviews which are basically just sales tactics. They do not really review the product but rather just convince you it is good. With that in mind, be careful using the strategy you are using.

I havent seen any big name IMers doing this, seems to be mostly low level, quick buck artists. Have you? Sounds like you're now immune to the tactic!

Yeah, definitely seen this, but not by the big gurus. They usually use the more sophisticated "I made $92,291 in 7 days by using my friend (insert guru name)'s + (insert method)". With an implied message that if you only do 1/10 of the results that they got, you'll be happy.

    Hi David,

A lot of the initial responses read like textbook advice for the the placement of page elements and color selections. I think that only minor "tweaks" are needed in that regard.

More on target (IMHO), are the objections to use of the Facebook signup.

I know that I, personally, have NEVER signed up to anything that used the FB signup button.

My guess is that IM'ers (your target market for this incentive) are more leery of this, than the general consumer market, and if this is your first test of this technique it may well account for your drop in conversion rate.

Have you split tested this page with a standard optin form?

If you do - let me know... I might be interested in reading your ebook

For using the FB Connect, I think I need to establish more trust and do more to explain the safety of using the facebook connect system.

I still come back to your target market on this - IM'ers.

I know that I've seen the "safety" explanations, often. Do you really think that it is more worthwhile to try to convince your visitor of the "safety" of Facebook, rather than convincing them of your own trustworthiness? To what end?

While it might get you a small percentage increase in this market... It wouldn't sway me, and I doubt that many others in this market will agree to allow FB to share their email address with another.

You are essentially asking me to trust both YOU and FACEBOOK.

While I know that Facebook already has my email address, and if I optin to your offer, you will too - it raises the question of why wouldn't you just ask for it, directly?

Instead, your visitors are asking themselves questions like:
        • What really happens behind the scenes when I click that button?
        • Is there some "magic" going on that I don't know about?

It sounds to me like you will wind up spending too much time/effort convincing your reader to trust the FB button, rather than stressing the benefit they will receive from getting your freebie.

If you expended that additional effort, it would just make me question (even more) "why?".

I think you're right. I originally built it with a simple email opt-in, but then thought why not simplify the process by letting people use facebook connect for a one-click signup. At which point I become enthralled by the tech part of integrating it.

I lost track of the end user and how I came up the idea for the site to provide people with great information about what the gurus are really doing, not just saying.

It seems that warriors want a simple email opt-in, and it's foolish to try to convince them to use something they don't want to or aren't comfortable with yet.

I'll add back the email opt-in, and put the facebook connect as a secondary option.

As a potential buyer: For me, the Facebook login is a huge turn off -- because I don't know "you" at all either as a person or as a business entity, so I don't trust you enough to let you access my FB. Nothing about you personally, or this page, I just value my privacy too much (I have very few app opt ins on my personal or professional pages). At best, if I was desperate for the info, I would sign up with a dummy FB I use for questionable offers and suspects spam and don't check, so it wouldn't do you much good anyway, and I suspect others would do the same.

As a writer/IM colleague -- I agree with the above posters who felt the site was too impersonal. I also think the call to action is a little vague and would tighten up the writing a bit. Hope this helps!

This squeeze design is based on one of his sites I've used it before with some success in another niche. However, the use of facebook connect is new. I don't think Ryan's used that yet.

I would hope that low conversions isn't a topic that's too taboo - otherwise I wouldn't have built a thriving business helping people improve them!

I can actually see several things beyond the items mentioned in the poll that may be harming your conversion rate. Not to sound too self-promotional here, but I'd highly suggest getting a website review as I think the points would make a dramatic difference in your conversion rate. Just a suggestion though!

I'm guessing you've already got a good system like Google Analytics and a split testing system set up so that you can measure that the changes you make are having an effect on your conversions?

      Happy 4th of July everyone!

I finished up removing the fb connect signup system and am now using an email signup/aweber double opt-in, that then creates the user account for download on confirmation.

      Already seeing a difference.

Still have some cosmetics to fix up, but moving in the right direction

      Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

Are there still people naive enough to believe there are really "dirty little secrets"? Or that IM gurus are sitting around with all the marketing tricks? For my money, this approach is really old and worn out. It was worn out 10 years ago. Come up with a fresh hook and your conversions will improve.
