Veteran Warrior: Have The Perfect Idea -No Idea Were To Start

I've been working online for a while now, a little money here a little there.

A little SEO and design consulting yada yada yada.

But i'm still to find my home on the net. My feet are itchy to be honest.

I recently found an area that Im feeling very comfortable in and it brought about the an Idea so great I had to go grab a beer

I used to write/draw comics when I was younger and I have the perfect Idea for an online comic. I know exactly who the audience is, I have funny ideas for content and i'm fairly certain the niche will devour the content...

My problem is this: I have no idea where to start.

I dont have web development skills apart from tweaking blogger, setting up domains and a little html.

I dont currently use any drawing software and Im still wondering how I would monetize this idea properly and not with some fly by adsense theory.

Some of the BIG web comics out there are ranking quite high on Alexa and they have a very large following. I have no way of knowing how much money they make, but i'll assume its a lot.

I currently can not investment heavily in the way of money which is actually quite a good thing for me because it is holding me from jumping in head first like I usually do.

Any ideas?

I really don't know about comics. It's a pretty cool skill to have.

Check out Create to Conquer. Not comics, but close.

How are your established competitors making money?

You need to be sure that you understand their business model and how much money they are making with it.

I think this sort of thing would lend itself well to building up a social media following. If people really like your content then the whole thing should naturally go viral.

You can check wordpress themes. It requires no coding.
You could setup a joint venture with a fellow warrior. Some will be very interested with your idea.
Social media will be your main traffic source.

Yeah, start a blog.. It's your real asset, your virtual real estate. Obviously, there are pros and cons..

    Pros:
    1) Free to setup (or low-cost)
    2) Long term residual business
    3) Passive Income to be made
    4) Doesn't require a lot of technique skills (am referring to wordpress)

    Cons:
    1) No such thing as instant gratification - requires patience
    2) Have to play your card according to google's algorithm
    3) May take longer than expected
    4) Have to update/upgrade/learn search-engine optimization on a consistent basis

Weigh the pros and cons and see if it's a calculated venture you should do. Hope this help

P.S. I have just started a new blog as well (only 2 months old), you can view it at my signature below.. feel free to use my blog as a guide/reference for you. No complicated design and such.. Nice and sweet IMO..

Yeah I kind of know the whole blog thing Jeremiah, thanks.

Studying the competition is a good idea.

Most of my traffic would not come from social media, I wouldnt think so anyway. I could be wrong.

Wouldn't most of your traffic come from syndicating the comic? I'd be trying to get as many eyeballs as possible on that puppy.

You can put off social media until you have a following.

I know a cartoonist -- I paid him $25 to do this comic for me:

      Best advice is this

Dont fly too high, its better to make sure that you got backups in place.

I wish I could give a better answer. I'm not an expert, I don't follow many webcomics (just some popular manga stuff)...

You can set up a simple website using Wordpress. I've seen some templates for similar sites around, probably at Premium WordPress Themes, Web Templates, Mobile Themes | ThemeForest
Web development is so easy. Just don't overthink.

About starting your own webcomics, I'd read advice from experts if I were you: site:amazon.com webcomics - Google Search

Here's a popular lens (recommended by a friend, a designer and graphics artist): So You Want To Start A Webcomic...

    I hope it helps.

You may want to consider instead of trying to learn graphic software to draw out the comic on paper like I assume you already do and then scan it into an image. Post the image on your blog and see what the reaction is.

If the response is good and you really want to do this then you can learn the software if need be. But by doing it this way you won't hold up things too long before you see how you feel about it and if there is a good response.

    They make stuff for that.

I typically find it best to start with the beer - then the ideas come.

I'd spend some time really diving into similar sites like the one you want to create. Take a lot of notes on their structure and how you want the layout and navigation to go. Then you can always hire out to have a template done - or even better try installing wordpress today (since you are familiar with blogger). You'd be shocked at how easy it is to customize a WP site to look like html or what ever - not to mention it will be very easy to manage long term.

You can always buy/use a scanner. I just chucked one in the trash this last week - and seem to find a lot of yard sales selling them.

Don't assume! They are driving traffic which is good, but it all boils down to how they are monetizing - so spending time on these sites, peeking at the source code, and taking notes is where you will find your answers. See if they have autoresponders set up as they could also be selling stuff there. Sign up to as many as you can so you can see what they are mailing.

Yes - as mentioned - try installing wordpress on a subdomain or find a cheapo coupon for a buck for a domain and install something.

Draw up some comics, and scan them in, and upload to the site.

Draw up your site as to how you want it designed. You can always scan that in too for the end designer to make you a template.

And spend time on the sites you "think" are making money and take notes on what they are doing and how you might incorporate that into your own site.

There are TONS of other products you could affiliate for - no need for just adsense - although be careful about completely writing this out of the picture.

There are more than a few professional cartoonist that frequent the forum. Create a new thread to attract their attention and you might get "real advise from real cartoonist" that were once where you are now. "Cartoonist seeking advise" and then change the tag to cartoonist-advise (with the dash).

An increasing trend at the minute is cartoon sales page videos.
    Eample1

Another guy on fiverr (but not charging $5)
    Example2

I did notice a WSO recently with a similar sales video.

Just a thought and it is new enough to position yourself well.
Even selling offline videos to local business for their websites
and upselling Youtube/Google rankings would be hugh.

    • A number of people have PM'd me asking who the cartoon artist is (above). I hope you understand but I don't want to give out his name without clearing it with him first.

There are cartoonists on Fiverr (as well as people who are actually caricaturists but call themselves cartoonists) and they're probably worth a look. You won't get a 4-panel cartoon for $5, though.
