Why make it so hard. Just download the wp-ecommerce plugin and fill in the fields. Add as many products as you want digital or tangible. Buy now or shopping cart and it is free and will manage it all for you even the downloads.

There is more than one way to use wordpress blog as an e-commerce website. However it can only be used for relatively simple e-commerce websites. For full power and functionality of ecommerce websites, I think an e-commerce software such as Os Commerce or even Joomla/Viruemart will probably be more flexible.

I probably agree with web-design company, that a full power e-commerce system is something like osCommerce or Magento.
