1ShoppingCart upsell to free trial - messes up badly with Paypal

I'm very curious if anyone here has encountered the same problem, or knows what the heck is going on.
I created an upsell with 1ShoppingCart. People buy an ebook, and can choose a 30-day free trial for a monthly membership.
I've tested this upsell with both credit card and paypal. Everything works perfectly with credit card.
The customer can choose Paypal at two points in 1ShoppingCart: On the shopping cart page, and on the checkout page. On the shopping cart page, the purchase and upsell can be made without a problem, albeit with a lot more hassle than with credit card.
However, when the customer chooses to pay by Paypal on the checkout page, the following happens:
-> Enter information on 1SC, click on the Paypal logo
-> Login to paypal
-> Agree to pay the price for the ebook
-> Paypal page where you have to wait X seconds before being redirected back to our website
-> Upsell page
-> If you buy the upsell, login to paypal again
-> Agree to buy the Free Trial
-> BUT THEN PAYPAL WILL GIVE AN ERROR BECAUSE PRICE MUST BE GREATER THAN ZERO
-> User must manually put in a price greater than $0 !!
-> After putting in random amount: Paypal page "Wait X seconds before being redirected" again
-> 1SC page: "Verifying with Paypal"
-> 1SC page: "We were unable to complete your order at this time."
-> Customer WILL get Paypal confirmations of purchases through email, but not from 1SC.
This is bad, bad, bad.
I would love to hear some advice about this. If people here have the same deal (free trial as an upsell with 1ShoppingCart) I suggest testing this out yourself.
