Ping.fm, Pingomatic, Posterous

Hi, I'm using the three programmes. As I study the posts here, I am thinking
that I am doing the wrong thing? Should I get rid of one or even two? If so which? I'm bothered about being rated as a blog spammer. I also read that if you edit a Wordpress.com post a few times, each time you do, it goes out to my pingers and this is also rated as spamming? Can anybody please advise?

I'll preface this and say that I don't use WP.com...I'd rather own my site than rent it from someone else.

Outside of that, yes, every time you edit a post, it gets re-pinged. Post-Penguin, that's a bad thing. Install this plugin:

WordPress › cbnet Ping Optimizer « WordPress Plugins

It keeps WP from pinging your blog all over the place, which keeps you from looking like a spammer. Since Penguin hit, I have pinged any of my sites...I only ping from Tier 2 back.

Thanks for the tip Jay. I was looking for a solution to this for some time too.
Going to give it a try right now.

I was concerned over this problem and I clicked this link but Wordpress do not recommend this plug in.
Are there any other plugins that do it?

    Hi,

Thank you for not Blog Spamming anymore. Appreciate it very much. God Bless You !

I'm a bit confused though, about your concern on letting pingers ping after making changes on articles.

Unless you're updating the same pages hundreds of times EVERYDAY, why would you worry? To me it is a good effort in updating RSS & SEs, so spiders can crawl.

Not an expert. But what I understand from several videos by Google's Matt Cutt's about PENGUIN is different and part of the process do require pinging.

Those affected by PENGUIN and want to climb back in SERPs need to update their content: -> from Low Value To Higher Value.

    Thus entails :
    1. Inserting more content - elements and facts into existing pages or
    2. Reducing the flood of keywords in the articles to a sensible proportion
    2. Combining 2 or 3 articles together to add more meat to topics
    3. Throwing out hidden text and "unstuffing" meta keywords & descriptions

All those efforts require pinging after making changes to get spiders' attention.

So I don't see why we need to worry.

Or am I so ignorant that I should in fact worry about this "ping" matter?

They don't recommend it simply because it hasn't been updated. It still works just fine and does exactly what it's meant to do. That's all I care about.

        Hi J,

WP doesn't ping by itself. The ping URLs need to be set at the Update Services to ping.

So even without the plugin, the ping process can be halted by just deleting the list of ping URLs.

    1. Ping.fm died yesterday is is no longer in service.

    2. Ping.fm and Posterous offer totally different services than Pingomatic. Pingomatic notifies selected resources that updates have been made, while Ping.fm (used to) and Posterous syndicate content to Web 2.0 and sharing sites.

Ping.fm doesn't exist anymore and Posterous is from what I recall a web 2.0 website that is now aquired by twitter.
The only service used for pinging is pingomatic. Long story short, forget about pinging your posts! It's crap. Also it's a good thing Ping.fm doesn't exist anymore! From what I've tested, it shows a trail for Google and you could easily get banned.

I just found out the hard way about pingfm. I really depended on it and spend alot of time setting up all my accounts. It is too bad they decided to let us all down. I guess that is what I get relying on a free service.

Don't worry about Ping.fm. I doesn't bring you any benefits. It was just another way you could get banned by Google.

Would it be better or worse to have additional ping/notification resources?

Google is able to find out quick about new content on your website. The pinging services are not only useless, but also they could really harm you
