IMers Which Do You Prefer Work Hard or Work Smart?

For Warriors who have been in the world of IM, which do you prefer work hard or work smart?

I, for one, have been working so hard for the past years. I want to venture into IM and see how it goes. Earning passive income would be beneficial. At least, I can still find online gigs at the same time have something to fall back into when the going goes tough.

Any thoughts?

Initially though i wanted to work smartly on everything I did, working hard was the way to split test smaller details in IM to find out what larger picture projects would work. Then the "working smartly" part kicked in where I took off with whatever I found worked. Ideally you would work smartly at all times since working hard is typically synonymous with monotonous grunt work. But now I'd say I work smartly with perseverance. I outsource all of the hard and monotonous stuff now

  • @hernalian: You are suggesting to go for working hard and smart at the same time? Is it 50-50 or 60-40?

The IM world is so big that everyone can earn money if they know what they are at. I tried clickbank but I did fail on that one. I became an affiliate of a freelance site I earned about $100-$200 I guess in 2-3 years time. I just made a blog using blogspot, wrote useful blog posts on how to make money as a freelancer, and made some forum posts on a local forum.

I did not focus on that one since I do not earn money right away. But now, I think I need to diversify my sources of income. At least, I have two sources instead of one.

  • @heavysm: Wow, that's a good word of advice for a person who want to take a plunge into the world of IM again.

It gets boring at times when you keep on doing same thing over and over again. My productivity seems to go down the drain after an hour of doing it.

Work Hard (to test the waters) --> Work Smart (when taking off) with an inclusion of outsourcing tasks that are monotonous.

Hope I got your formula right

I feel you have to test the water and 'just do it'. It's only after you've been working for a while that you find that you know what work is bringing in 80% of your revenue.
You can then implement systems so that you are not doing all the stuff that others could be doing for you.

I'm not sure if I'm working harder or smarter at the moment but I AM working that's for sure!!

Working smart is always advisable, but if you don't know how to work hard you'll never truly know how to work smart.

Both of them.If you work hard, eventually you will be smart I think. Even the best player in the world work hard to be in the top.

To me I don't think there's anything hard about it. Once you know and understand what IM is, it all becomes brain power.

You make your own hours. You don't have to drive any where. There is nothing physical about it.
You gain the knowledge you need then you work smarter at it.

It will only be hard if you make it hard. If you truly understand what you are doing it becomes as easy as going on Facebook.

I would start out seeing it as an hobby. Take that stress of you needing to make money now off your shoulders. Have fun with it and in time the money will start rolling in.

    Good luck

The two aren't mutually exclusive. I mean, you kind-of have to do both in order to be successful.

Yeah, you need both, at least in the beginning. Once you get some traction, then you can work smart and not as hard because you have a foundation and a system that runs by itself. At least, that should be the goal. Most people move from a day job to IM because it allows them to work smart and less hard. Freedom is what most people are after. But in the beginning, you do need both.

Working smart is definitely the way to go in today's world.
You can work hard by doing everything yourself and working 8 hours a day, but you can get the same amount of work done by hiring a fiver gig at $10/day while just focusing on the most important tasks that you have expertise in.

It will save your time, you'll be more productive and at the end of the day you'll have more sanity.

Always remember the 80/20 rule, it says 80% of your profits comes from the 20% of tasks you do, so job of a great marketer to find out the 20% that he must do himself and outsource the rest 80% to the third world countries.
Now that's what I call smart work.

    Just my 2 cents

Working smart requires a bit of working hard mentally, but after it's all done... working smart is my favorite choice. Allows me to work less while making more.

I know when I plan and work smart I get a serious amount of work done.

Besides my working smart IS my working hard. Perhaps we need clarification on what you mean by working hard?
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6559303].message }}
  • If I have to make a poll right now, work smart is what most IMers here at WF preferred. I learned a lot of things:

    1. the 80/20 principle
    2. work hard first, then work smart later
    3. a combination of both
    4. outsource tasks (monotonous) to people in the third world countries wherein labor is cheap
    5. seeing it as a hobby, later on it would be like as easy as Facebook

    Any more thoughts?

Hard work at starting and then smart work for more profits. But I tend to alternate among them.
