Kindle Publishing for Aussies and Kiwis?

In Kindle's FAQ, it states that Amazon pays by direct deposit to a US, UK or EU bank account or that it will send a check in US dollars.

So what are the best options for someone who wants to hop on board the Kindle train who is from Australia or New Zealand? If you're from either of those countries and have published on Kindle, you get extra karma points for your reply.

Thanks,

Hey Marcia.....I'm in UK but Amazon only pays directly into bank account in £ for sales on Amazon.co.uk. Sales on Amazon.com are paid by cheque in $US. I suspect that this set up will be similar for you.

      Colin,

Thank you - I am American. I'm actually asking on behalf of two clients, one in Australia and one in NZ.

    Hey Marcia

I am Australian and am firmly embedded in the Kindle train

For the past few years I have been publishing myself, and last year also began helping others from the US/UK/NZ/AU to get published on Kindle.

Amazon Kindle will only issue a check in US dollars to an Australian.

This means that when cashing the check the Aussie has to have it converted from USD to AUD which costs about a $10 fee, depending on which bank they use.

Tip to Get an Extra 25% Royalties for Australian Authors Publishing Through Amazon or CreateSpace I am Australian and could not believe how much of a pain in a neck it was to figure out how to deal with the IRS in America when it comes to self publishing through US sites such as Amazon/CreateSpace/SmashWords.

Print on Demand books through CreateSpace or Smashwords withhold 30% tax on your royalties unless you have a US tax ID.

If you are an Australian, but do have a US tax ID you only have to pay 5%... so you end up with a whopping 25% more money from your royalties.

In those cases because we do not have US tax ID's we need to get one.

The process for getting a US Tax ID for an individual is a pain in the butt, however through trawling through a bazillion different US tax related forums and sites I was able to find a great way around it

You can get an EIN (Employer Identification Number also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number) in your business name, or if you do not have a registered business name, in your own name.

If you call the IRS on 267-941-1099 and ask for an EIN they can issue it over the phone. It takes about 10 minutes and you will need your Australian Tax File Number.

I recommend using a service like Skype to make the call so you can do it cheaply.

Once you have that you just fill out a W-8BEN form and send it to CreateSpace/Smashwords,etc

    Instructions about form: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw8ben.pdf

    Form: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw8ben.pdf

The tax treaty between the US and Australia is Article 12

This allows you to pay only 5% withholding tax on book royalties

For the reason you are using the W-8BEN form you put "Australian author self publishing via US distributor
    "

You only need to get an EIN once

      Hi Jamie,

I live in New Zealand, what do I exactly need to do to gain an Amazon account and receive payment via check (my understanding is by check is my only option)

It's the Tax ID I don't really understand

      Thank you

Hi Marciayudkin, you can apply for a Payoneer debit card through
Amazon and set up a US bank account for it (through amazon too.) this allows you to load your debit card and use the money in Australia - and I suppose, other countries too. and you don't have to wait for the check
