Tried IM for A Year and Nothing... Advice Needed!

Hey Guys... I've been lurking around on the Warrior Forum for some time now, and this is my first post. I've learned internet marketing for the past year via complete trial and error (mostly error).

I've tried to make niche sites and monetize via Adsense (a la Pat Flynn), use PPC to drive traffic to squeeze pages and build a list, build an authority site on topics I'm knowledgeable/passionate about, and Amazon review sites.

I've had virtually no success. The niche sites are ranking #1 or on the first page of google for some keywords, but Adsense income is almost nothing, the PPC campaigns seem to be a big waste of money because the list isn't really growing and I've never made a clickbank sale. The authority sites I've made are in the areas of Travel & Personal Finance, and they only get about 300 visits a month, and the Amazon sites get virtually no traffic.

I don't feel like giving up, but I'm wondering where I'm going wrong, or what I should focus on. I'm a corporate banker, so I know the finance niche very well, and I'm passionate about travel, so I think this could be easy to continue to blog about, but I'm wondering if I'm just being too broad on these topics.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi travelvulture,

    I've been there too.

I'm trying to understand what other people are going through and set up a short 10 question survey, the link is below.

Adsense is a low pay off method to make revenue from your site. If your site visitor doesn't find what their looking for, your hoping they will click on the Absence link. Its like sending the scraps to Absence, your left overs.

Depending on your traffic levels, you could sell banner space on your site, BuySellAds.com might be worth a look, but it all depends on your traffic.

Sending PPC traffic straight to a squeeze page, I hope you had a free offer to give away to encourage the visitor to enter their email.

    Traffic Methods:
You have only mentioned 2 methods, SEO & PPC both require Google who only accounts for 30% of the global traffic.

There are about 12 methods which is a bit to write about here, PM me (private message) to get more information.

Travel & Personal Finance are both highly competitive niches as well as broad.
Could you knock them down into smaller niches, like avoid bankruptcy, debt reduction is pretty popular. Focus on solving someones problem.

Have you thought about sticking with one niche, then make a sales funnel.
The visitors enters their email for the 1st items, a low cost item, then up sell with related products.

Make a business process out of it, I had my biggest break through when I started to think of it like a normal business and think of the process, step 1 through to 10.
Its a sales process only the marketing channel is the internet.

The benefit of sticking with 1 niche is that you could spend between 50-75% of your efforts promoting the site. Doing that across many sites just leaves you spread too thin.

Lets look at the Guru launches for an example. Lets look at what they do not what they sell.
    • 1 product with up sells for the tools then another up sell for the coaching.
    • Promoted via email marketing as they get JV to promote to their lists.

Maybe one of the mistakes it's the lack of focus on your strategy.

I regularly work on a single project until I make a sustainable income form it.

If you decide for Amazon, you must work in create a niche site that include really good content to pre-sell the products and build a niche around it.

You must test and track every single day, until you figure what work for you and then double your efforts on it.

Thanks guys, and I think you're both right. I feel really unorganized and spread thin by trying to monetize about 10 sites via different methods. I also think that the niches that I've picked are too broad, but I just can't seem to think of a way to scale them down to a more specific area.

I am in situation somewhat like yours, although I have not yet used PPC or Adsense yet. What seems to be helping me is getting some in-depth training through a very low cost membership site.

Part of the video training offered is on PPC and Adsense. The trainer advises not to try Adsense without doing thorough research, as your money will quickly go down the drain.

One thing that impressed me about this site was that I was able to view several free videos before I signed up. This gave me an idea of the quality of info that would be provided.

I'll share the site info with you if you're interested. E-mail me at mbseddie70 at gmail.com.

    Cheers!

Also, I did have a free branded ebook on each of the squeeze pages I created. However, I don't know if my copy was just that bad, or my PPC skills are just awful but I seemed to pay a couple hundred bucks for about 10-20 signups on various niches from weight loss, to solar energy, to marriage advice, and many other Clickbank related niches.

If your into banking, what about a niche of:

Getting your 1st car, how to structure your loan so it gets approved.
Target market of young teens, explain guarantee via parents, insurance etc.
You could find insurance dealers on Commission Junction for your country (CJ.com)

Then find some other products to complement the new car owner.
You could run a webinar and record it as you walk through the product.

This is a bit more advance....CPA offer with gift cards to your new list.

This could be a membership site with a low one time fee of $27.
I get these guys to make membership sites as its time consuming - MarkPress.net

      This needs some extensive research...
Also potential problem is your competing with the parents as they are their trusted adviser, so your marketing needs to talk to the parents. Maybe with insider tips from a Banker who wants to blow the whistle on the dirty tricks.

Maybe because you have teenage kids yourself or your sisters best friend had this done to her.

      Traffic:
      1. Facebook PPC as you can target by age and location.
Gender specific landing page, so the picture of the car is a guys car or a girls car.
Have a look at All about Abs.com as they have a landing page and you click if your a girl or guy.

      2. Free ebook Directories
      3. How-To Sites

Thanks Brett. Great Suggestions! The only part I'm not completely understanding is whether or not I would make a site just to discuss buying the first car, or would that be a blog post on a personal finance related blog? Thanks again for taking the time to provide such detailed replys!

          1. Any blog post on a personal finance related blog is to create awareness to send people to your main site.
          2. Squeeze Page for the free report or checklist
          3. Main site with $27 discuss finance for buying the first car
          4. Add some bonuses - like $50 road side assistance coupon. If you can pack this with $270 of bonuses it is an easy sell. This is where a $100 gift card via a CPA offer could come into play. Try for a CPA offer with name & email entry only to get the gift voucher. This could be located on a tab inside the members site called Bonuses. They click the image or link and the offer appears.

          Idea:
Facebook Fan Page called - what do you want to drive for your 1st car...
Promotional Page - for content and building a list of people who hit like.
Facebook PPC could be used to build the likes, then add content and paid product later.
This could be a good place to test the idea, see if it has potential.
Find an image for the top of your page- get made like a banner via Fiverr.
Fiverr.com to get your fan page made.
Ask users to submit their photo of what you want as your first car.
Let the users generate the content.
Facebook PPC test with $10 a day for (you decide budget) and aimed at teens who are 1 year away from obtaining their license.

          Budget:
          $10 on Fiverr.com
          $50-100 on Facebook PPC

          Research:
Check clickbank to see if there are similar items for their sales stat's.
          cbtrends.com
          cbengine.com
Gravity Score over 100 is a hot product.
(this is an Internet Marketing figure, other niches have lower gravity scores and I'm not firmilar with what they should be)

          Expand:
          Motorcycle
          Boat
          Yacht
          Plane
Other pieces of equipment that depreciate in value
Funnel into Finance Broker leads, skip bank as they won't pay for leads.

Heck, I should do this, I've been looking for a new product idea.

I can tell you one reason you're not having much success. You're blogging about a too broad topic. Try finding a smaller topic within the Travel and Finance niche that you can speak extensively on and become an authority over

Are you getting traffic from your top Google SE rankings? If so, are you targeting niches, topics and keywords relevant to ad clickers? i.e. People who are searching for more details about the different products and solutions they can purchase to solve their problems and satisfy their needs that they can neither solve nor satisfy on their own. Most sites configured to earn from CPC ad click profits need heaps of organic SE and direct traffic to gain substantial income for the owner..

For building your mailing lists, have you tried solo email ads in mailing lists of others comprised of people included in your target markets, private PPC/PPV/PPM ads placed in online places where your target markets frequently hang out (Facebook PPC is an example), syndicating your indexed onsite content in ezine channels and content syndication networks with large active publisher bases comprised of owners and administrators of heavily trafficked, high authority sites in your target niches, and sending guest posting proposals to owners and administrators of heavily trafficked, high authority sites in related niches with many active regular viewers, RSS readers and mailing list subscribers?

Have you tried steadily building the onsite content of your niche sites, posting free offers to generate a list of prospect mailing list subscribers, posting a paid offer to generate a buyer mailing list, including comparison charts with point by point details and comparisons of relevant Clickbank or Amazon products and other affiliate products in your free and paid offers and also in your onsite content, then doing the things I mentioned above to promote your site and offers?

Randall, I've tried Google Adwords (got banned for sending traffic directly to a squeeze page...) So, after that I moved to MSN Adcenter, 7Search, and Adbrite, but Adcenter is the only one that I've actually gotten any real results in building my list on.

It took me almost 2 years to hit the 1000 a month mark. You have to stay focused on your goals and just keep learning and practicing. Eventually you will succeed in some way.

I think Tmoby is right ! All of this methods you've mentioned has learning curve year or even more ! You make 10 websites 50% = no money , You make one site 100%=$$$
Pick one method ( I would say micro niche blogs ) and stick to it . Learn everything about it
Get good at it , get better than the others , then you'll make some money !

It's been said before but it seems it can't be said enough.

Get REALLY GOOD AT ONE THING.

Stick to it for a good 12-24 months, give it everything you've got and learn to do it exceptionally well.

Then you have a serious chance of making money.

Jumping from one thing to the next will get you nowhere.

I'll repeat that just in case you missed it...

Get REALLY good at ONE thing.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Take a deep breath, take a step back and think about this...

You need to do something that has what I call the 3 Ps:

    Passion
    Profit
    Practicality

Passion - do you CARE about the subject? If you don't, people will see right thru it and you need to personally connect with people.

Profit - is there MONEY to be made in the activity you're considering (banking - yes, general travel stuff - possibly if narrower)

Practical - is it PRACTICAL for you to be advising / informing people about something you know very little about or are on the same knowledge level as them on?

    Good luck! :-)

It sounds like you've done okay with SEO if your niche sites are on page one. Apply the SEO principles you've learned to get more traffic to your travel and finance blogs. You don't need to make the niches more narrow. Just make each page target one keyword to start off and try to rank on the first page for each keyword you target. Make the keywords long tail with less traffic and competition than the keywords you targeted for your niche sites so you can be sure to rank for them. You might want to play around with the Adsense layout on your site as well in order to generate more revenue form that traffic.
