Google Adwords: Really accurate?

Hi all,

So i have been looking at market research and after days of searching, i found a keyword which is low in competition and have ~5k exact searches/month. I am quite sure i can get the top 3 ranking in several months.

Then there's the catch. I checked the google insight and found that the particular keyword have really high searches couple of years ago, as compared to now.

So, i am worried that the 5k searches are not exactly 5k, but instead the average searches/month so far. Hence the exact searches now would be far lower than 5k/month. Hope this make sense.

1. Anyone have any idea if it's safe to proceed? Or how does google actually calculates the monthly searches?

2. Even better, any methods that i can determine how much searches have been performed for the past 30 days?

Thanks!

Well, daily searches changes from time to time so I think there is no 100% accuracy even in google's data.

Monthly searches are based on the average of the last 12 months (afaik).

When you say the keyword has "low competition", are you referring to the competition column in Google Adwords Keyword Tool? If so, that competition value doesn't mean what you think it does.

It refers to the advertisers Adwords competition for that particular keyword and not the competition to rank for it.

BTW, this question should have been posted in Adsense / PPC / SEO Discussion Forum

Keyword tools, in general, should only be used as a guideline. The reason is because they tend to be a month or so behind -- even the free Google keyword tool. If a keyword tool says a keyword gets 5k hits a month, it's going to take you a few weeks to begin to see that much traffic, and you won't get it all -- even if you do everything properly and get ranked on the first page. That's why, when possible, you should get ranked for multiple keywords. It's just how the search algorithm works.
