Using sub-niches to build up to a larger niche.

So one of the sites I am going to be building up has a decent amount of keyword competition. My thought is that I could use low competition sub-niches to prop the main site by funneling traffic. There were 2 methods I was thinking of of going both have pros and cons.

On Site Groups of Pages
Pros
  • Everything stays in one place I can have the sub-niches be their own categories and add as needed.
  • Keeps folks in place so they don't lose the content that brought them there.
Cons
  • Losing the benefit of external links from the other sites.
  • Would diversity of content dillute the seo effects?

Mini External Sites
Pros
  • It would allow me to externally link to the larger site.
  • People visiting wouldn't get distracted by the extra content beyon the sub-niche.
Cons
  • It might reduce the cross over.
  • It would appear to be a less active site compared to the larger one.

Have you used this tactic? What issues did you run into? Would subdomains be a good in-between?

I have decided my idea is to actually combine both methods. I am going to try and set up little microniche sites and use a widget from http://www.linkwithin.com to display "you may also like" links to the main site. The main site will also contain the information from the microniche site as well.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
