What should I look out for when hiring SEO "specialist" on oDesk/Elance

Hi Guys,

I am new to this and would really appreciate some pointers on how I can find a good SEO consultant for my forum. I am in the wireless category so our keywords are high competitive and would need a lot of SEO help in order to get my new site up in ranking.

I submitted a job on odesk today and within an hour I received 200 SEO "experts" applications. Some people charges $1 an hr some charges $16 an hour. Some people are guaranteeing 1st page, some will not guarantee because they say there is no such thing as guarantee. Other are saying they can get me top ranking within 2-3 months, so are estimating 6 months. Some say they only use white hat, others say they also you "gray hat".

As you can see, I am overwhelemed. So who should I hire? What are some red flags? How do I know if the guy I am hiring will actually give me hiring ranking? How do I know if the guy is doing more help than harm? I am also concern that they will do some type of "Gray/black" hat that might harm our site when google releasing a new update.

Thanks for hearing me blabber, any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks guys.

First check their reviews and rating. SEO is a part of your business that shouldnt be trusted to just anyone. You want them to have verifiable experience. Then ask them what methods they use and to provide you with a plan/proposal.

The first thing I would do if I were you is learn about the basics of SEO yourself. This way you'll make a better informed decision. Then like others said check the person's feedback, ratings, etc. And as a hint, there is no guarantee when it comes to SEO. Nobody knows for sure 100% how google ranks sites, etc.
