Marketing a Music Classifieds site online? Any tips?

I'm helping a buddy of mine market their music classifieds site where artist can place ads to showcase their talent for hire or people can find artist for their events. I've done emails and craigslist ads (over 70 at one time) with little to any success. I'm looking at getting some more seo work done (i guess thats the one things those CL ads will be good for). Any tips or advice would be a blessing to get more targeted traffic.

Thanks

Maybe you could get involved in some music-related forums or join musician's groups on various social sites.

Sorry to sound negative but I don't think you did enough market research for this idea. You'd find you're entering a very saturated and VERY competitive market. Most artists just use facebook, youtube or soundcloud to promote themselves, mainly because of HOW BIG these sites are and how much MORE LIKELY they are to get picked up by a GOOD LABEL.

You'd have to get good labels to follow your classified site before musicians imo. THEN maybe musicians will have incentive to hang out there.

I just don't think you really thought this one out, maybe I'm wrong but I'm a musician and would never use it personally.

I can write a page of reasons why, but I won't. Main reason is you would need to do A LOT of promoting and I mean A LOT to change the habits of ignorant musicians like me. We are too territorial, nor do I even see the reason or purpose this site would serve.

As much as I hate to say it, this is very good advice. Is the site on a nation wide scale? or is it local?

Actually...the website is not focused on getting acts signed to a label, but helping them get gigs and network with each other. I think I may focus more on people looking to hire artist. NOw a days artist aren't looking for a record deal if they are smart

I may look for people that do this on a regular basis and have them create account on the site and post ads like businesses like event companies, music promoters, booking agents, and any other company looking to hire a musician. Can you guys add to this if possible, I'm really just brain storming at this point. Thanks for all the advice!
