Are .ME domains getting more popular?

Hi everyone, i am interested in people's opinions here about the .ME extension. There has been some talk on places like techcrunch recently about the .ME extension really starting to gain some traction and getting more popular. In addition the .ME registry has teamed up with the likes of Sedo to offer some premium domains for sale soon. There there have been some pretty big sales this year for good .ME domains which seems to indicate they're going in the right direction. The final point is the general lack of solid/quality domains in any recognized extension keeps getting tougher to find. This will possibly remain the case until ICANN does something to change the set up.

However, to possibly counter the arguments above i was a bit bored for a moment and checking out godaddy for some domains and i discovered that there were some domains available which shocked me to be honest. I won't bore you with all the domains i got but just a few of them are:
1. EnergyEfficiency.me
2. GasCompany.me
3. PokerTournaments.me
4. FreePokerGames.me
etc.

I mean i have had plenty experience already of buying domains and selling to make a profit or to build successful sites around, but this seems odd to me as even .WS is taken for many of the domains so what were they doing available? I checked with godaddy who said one or 2 i checked, have a history of being registered before but i struggle to believe that's the case with all of them.

Anyway it would be great to see what others here feel about these points.
Kind regards
Joel

I see a lot of people with them for personal domains and there is about.me which is kind of popular.

What you may want to do is look for domain names where the URL makes up a readable sentence. The easiest way to do this is to start with 'Go' and end with .me:
    go-save.me (anything about saving money)
go-with.me (any dating or community project)
go-quote.me (you may be getting the idea)

Yes Thomas, i noticed that as well there does seem to be a lot of personal use for the extension which i think is a really healthy sign, unlike .co's where many are just squatting on them and waiting for the value to grow etc.

Interesting idea, that certainly would sound cool for branding purposes.

I agree with that and there's no question .com is king i am just wondering about the popularity of the extension and if it's rising

I am however also interested in opinions on some of the other points i made in the OP like if people feel they're really growing or not?
    Thanks

I can't say that I've stumbled onto a .me business site yet. I've only seen personal .me sites.

Yeah neither have i, but at least people are promoting personal sites with them and not just domain squatting.
      Thanks

They seem to be picking up though I have noticed something rather odd. On my phone if I just enter "domainnamehere.me", the android browser searches it by default. I have to specify http:// for it to try and resolve it.

That's really weird i've never heard of that before, and it's not too great for the .ME branding to have such poor usability. Maybe someone should tell them if they didn't know already that is.

They must be: even I'm buying them.

(I wouldn't really use them for business, I must say, but that's another matter).

Thanks Alexa, if you're buying them then i must be on the right track, i mean it wouldn't be possible that we have both been wasting money on them is it now?
Seriously though i think they're likely to increase in popularity over time as decent domains will continue to get more scarce as they naturally get taken in all decent extensions (unless ICANN really shake things up). I'm interested in why you and some others wouldn't use them for business though, as it's interesting to see how marketers are presently using them or not as the case may be?

I never doubted that they can rank well in google, i was mainly asking if they're becoming more popular now. Sill congrats on the rankings let's hope they stick although with google i wouldn't hold my breath.

A common problem for many, myself included. I have many more than 1 domain sitting there gathering dust on my godadddy account though.

Best way to find out is visiting Namepros or checking DNJournal.

I wouldn't use them for as a brand domain but they can be useful, say if you wanted to host a imgur or imageshack pic hosting clone site. Could go with img.me or pic.me etc...

It is a good way for sure, haven't seen much recently but then again i don't spend all my day on these sites by any means.

I don't agree with that, i mean why wouldn't you use them to create a brand, the extension seems geared up to do exactly that with it in my opinion.
