Selling/Securing Wordpress Plugins And Themes

My team is exploring a WordPress architecture that would allow Wordpress theme and plugin designers to distribute their work securely and prevent piracy. We have a concept for a simple solution that would allow you to sell your product and control it's deployment in an unobtrusive, friendly manner for your customers.

Before we dive in too far, I'd like the Warrior's take.

1. What would you like to see with such a system?
2. What are the challenges/roadblocks that you see?
3. Good Idea or not? Why?

I would very appreciative for thoughtful responses.

Best,

Carl

Means to do this already exist. Several things I own need only for me to enter a license key to work.

Set up for these keys is done 2 ways I know of. You sign up to a company and pay per thousand or so keys, or you buy a script that you can install on your own server that issues keys.

If you can develop something to secure that you can sell for under $200, PM me immediately.

    1. What would you like to see with such a system?
Low price, full control on my own server

    2. What are the challenges/roadblocks that you see?
When my server goes, so does their security - so I'd want some kind of default set in that if the callback runs into an inactive server it will still let the buyers function - and then resume back to normal. I've never had any issues with keys issued me, so this could already be some kind of function that goes with the options I mentioned above.

    3. Good Idea or not? Why?
If you can do it for less than the competition or offer something different, then of course it's a good idea.

As said, this is already being implemented and used.

Kick in a script to obfusicate the code, then kick on an automatic licensing system and do this for under $200 and call me so I can test it for you.

I'd be interested. I'm working on my first plugins right now and this would be something that I would value.

    My main needs would be:
    - ease of implementation so the developer can focus on value added funcationality rather than licensing. Max 2 hours developer time to integrate
    - Reliability across client hosting platforms to avoid lots of support calls. (could be a big hassle)
    - longeivity should something horrible happen to your business or servers (not suggesting that it will).

    Hope this helps.
