I'm Stuck. Someone Help?

I'm absolutely not getting how to submit a sitemap to google. I have the xml google sitemap plugin for wordpress, but upon checking my site using webmaster tools I find that 16 pages (URL's) are not showing up, or rather that google sees them as 404 (page not found).

Can someone please help me fix this problem? I just need to know
1. How to create a sitemap.
2. Where I upload this sitemap to (at my sever - which is hostgator)
3. How, then, to submit my sitemap to google.

If someone could help I would so appreciate it, right now I'm tearing my hair out.

    Hi Peter

From your post, it sounds like you already know the answers to your questions. The real question is why is Google missing your URLs?

A complete guess would be - are they noindex or nofollow pages? Have you excluded those pages for any reason when creating your sitemap?

If you've got the xml google sitemap plugin I think you do (its very common) then you don't need to upload it to any server. It should be creating a sitemap for you at http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/sitemap.xml

Then, go to Google Webmaster Central

and create an account with Google Webmaster tools. Login, you'll have to verify your site, which they provide instructions for, then you just give them the URL to your sitemap.

    Boom presto, you're done.

First off, you guys rock getting back to me so quick.

Swiftdeal, I definitely did not apply any no follow tags to the pages in question so there really is no reason they shouldn't be crawled. Unless I was hacked or something, which I sincerely doubt. In fact I am so new to wordpress I wouldn't even know how to check if there is a nofollow or noindex tag somewhere.

Secondly, I didn't create the sitemap it was done with the xml google sitemap plugin - which I checked and all of the pages in question are listed there.

I'm guessing I'm a complete idiot and had to submit the sitemap? I just assumed it was done for me, or crawled by google. My home page is indexed but that's it.

Jonathan, I have verified and submitted now using the address www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml. It's now pending the spiders to come and crawl around I guess.

Again - thanks heaps - u guys rule!!!

Did you go to google webtools?

They have a little 'test' page there, which you should upload so Google will recognise THAT page first. then look for the SiteMap

Yep I did that, grabbed the code and added it to my site. It's now verified so I'm just waiting to see if my pages will get indexed now.
