Back links And SEO Question.

Hi Jan,

I think the general rule is that targeted backlinks will provide the greatest benefit, but you'll also get benefits if you are consistently building other links back to your site.

Also, have you considered starting a few blogs and things around the net to link back to the site from?

All high PR links are good but the more closely they are related to your niche the better. Start with sites that are really similar to yours, then look at related niches (eg plumbing for used pipe) then more generic ones.

jan make sure your on site optimization is upto par - then look at your enemies... ahem i mean competitors websites and trace there links and see what methods they are using to get highly ranked...

there are many tools/resources to do this you just have to look for them - a good starting point would be getting the seoquake and seobook plugins for firefox...

Jan,
There are many ways to get backlinks.. Related ones or targeted ones can help you but also keep in mind that other non-targeted backlinks may have a higher exposure margin which can help you even more in the long run..

It's best to always test and see what results you get...

I do know that building blogs, squidoo pages etc will help a lot I was just wondering if it will be worth it to get backlinks from unrelated sites like Adobe.com which is a PR9 site or other non rerlated blogs? For instance if i go to one of your IM blogs and leave a backlink to my used pipe site would that benefit me?

Also which tool is good for checking where competitors are getting backlinks?

Well look at it like this... Social bookmarking sites, are they related or targeted to any specific site ?? No not really but yet it does not hurt at all to be bookmarked on many different sites and especially when the bookmarking is being done by other accounts and not just yours.

So to answer your question, yes it will help.. As for Adobe.com their main site may be a PR9 but other pages within that site may not be a PR9.

Tool for checking - There is a firefox plugin if you got firefox, can not think of the name of the plugin off hand though...

Its a site for an offline client of mine. Kinda hard to find blogs etc. on used pipe. I am already ranking really high for the site and I can ramp it up with squidoo lenses etc if I want to. Was just wondering about the whole backlink thing from non relative sites.

people will always link to unrelated sites and theres nothing you can do about it so im sure you can get backlinks for used pipes from nonrelevant sites they just wont weigh as much.

Forget about pr when building backlinks. Going with whats popular with google at the time is whats important. Web 2.0. The key word here really is user generated content.
Create articles and pages on sites that are coming up in google searches will get you your best benefit from backlink building

I agree with what is said above, while ANY link is good you will get the most value out of a targetted/related link.

I'd definitely consider what David said about building your own network. Social Bookmarking sites are always great for that.

Here's some of the ones I've used with some good results:
1. Squidoo
2. Hubpages
3. Wikidot
4. Wetpaint
5. Zimbio

If you regularly add keyword-targetted content to each of those plus your blog I'm sure you would start to see some great results. Ideally you would add content every day but every second day is also ok

In terms of link building specifically you could try a service like Linkvana.

hi jan i mentioned this in my original post - you will need to use firefox and install the firefox plugins seoquake and seobook

using these tools will help identify your competitors backlinks...

Some great suggestions, I think targeted backlinks are always the best and most beneficial for your traffic and sales in the long run, but you can also reap the rewards if you are consistently building other links to non targeted sites to your website. As an option for backlinking, you could try starting a few mini blogs that link back to your own website to provide further backlinking by simply pasting your own articles as content with relevant links to build more traffic. I tried it and it seems to work well!

You can use "inanchor" with Google and Yahoo Site Explorer for checking backlinks.

There are a few simple factors to consider when backlinking:

- Try to get one way backlinks
- Always try to get a PR4 or higher website pointing to yours
- Always use your keyword in the Anchor Text.
- Always make sure that the website that is pointing to yours is highly related to your subject.

Follow these steps and you can't go wrong.

Well, I read Jonathan ledger ebooks and he said it doesn't if the links come from so called a relevant niche or not. Well I do agree what he says because an article directory is not relevant to the targeted website unless you are written an article that got unused pipe on it. AFter all, seo should be done in a way that benefits the end user. However, if a case like that, you may get links from builders sites, real estate, water sewage, environments etc. Draw a mind map and see how little topics relevant to others.

Relevant or not is actually how you think and see if you can link 2 things together.

To answer your question as it relates to your keyword term:

1) First make sure people are searching for that specific term, or find a term related to your client's industry that is actually being searched.

2) Write articles and get backlinks this way. This puts control of the content in your hands and takes advantage of the high PR of many article directories. You are already finding out there are no blogs to leverage in your niche so articles is the way to go.

3) Build a Squidoo page and Hubpages page linking to your client's site.

3) Check competitor backlinks using SEOpen Toolbar for Firefox.

Before signing up with Linkvana, make sure they have a blog that fits your need. It is too expensive to chance it.
