I think there are lots of features that can make a blog successful. But the most important is the person behind the keyboard with everything that makes him/her personality.
I also think there are no universal recipes, just hard work and involvement, good examples, good practices and helpful tips.

Even more adverts on that site than the crappy TV channels such as Dave.

It may be good content, but I wasn't sitting through adverts to listen to it. I've never seen someone put adverts in a 5 minute youtube video. I hope that it doesn't catch on.
