Beeing a full time IM'er? :)

Just out of curiosity, please share If you are a full time internet marketer...

Have you ever got people saying (directly or indirectly) to "get a real job"?
What was your family's & friends' reaction when you told them what you did for a living?
How many times have you had to explain to other people how it works?
How many people have asked you to teach them to be a IM'er (outside of the internet)? Did you try to train those people? If yes, did they succeed?
Do you miss your old job?
At last, How long did you take to make this IM 'thing' a full time career? (from the moment you bought that product that was gonna give you $1M per day without any work until the moment where you quit your job)

Sorry if there are any similar threads, but I didn't found any

Thanks

      This right here.

I've had stints where I've been full time internet marketing, but I've also still done full time web application development, because the people I develop for know how to pay

Anyways, it's nice to know what other people have so you can make that your goal, but if you're new, get ready to probably lose money for several months before you see your first net gain. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to build a solid business anywhere in life, even on the internet!

When I explain SEO to people they say something along the lines of : "So that why when I google 'xyz' all I see is spam sites!"

I haven't had anyone tell me to get a real job. Most who know that I do this full time are impressed with what I've accomplished.

      This guy is a lad!

But I would love to be a full time I.M.er, just got an offline job yesterday but that is only to fund the online endeavors really. Just have this image of me in a few years time, travelling across the world and just being able to do whatever I want, not in a greedy way just not having to worry about money, then coming home to a nice house, car and girl. Thats the dream, definitely only a dream at the moment haha! GL in your I.M. Career.

My family was concerned at first because they didn't think it was possible and wanted me to get a 'secure' job. Once I talked about what I was making they came around more to the idea.

/\ Thats exactly how my oldest brother lives his life.

He makes $400,000/yr and works at home. Then my second oldest brother makes $130,000/yr and works at home too.

So naturally my brothers are the real reason I'm trying to make a living online (whether its marketing or not I don't really care). My family does not pester me because they ALREADY KNOW the potential of making a living at home. They are more than supportive in that regard.

Even though my second oldest brother makes less money, I'd still prefer his life more than my oldest brother. Because I SEE how much he actually works at home, and he DOESN'T WORK AT ALL.

He will tell you that he does, but every single time I go over his house he's watching tv or eating icecream for breakfast or playing golf with his kids or at karate lessons I NEVER SEE HIM WORK.

I have been over his home at least 100 times in the last couple years and not once did I ever see him doing anything I could label as "work". I am more jealous of this specific brother than anyone else in this world I can think of. I can't tell you how inspiring it is to just watch him live his life. He literally lives the true "American Dream". Owns a beautiful house, has a gorgeous & intelligent wife, kids, always buying new stuff he has SO MUCH garbage in his garage still in the package that he's never even opened. Like 6 different drills, 2 expensive ratchet sets, a flux welder still in the box, oxyacetylene torch still in the box, a fancy pulley system used for towing boats (he doesn't even own a boat), night vision goggles, just the most random stuff you can imagine. Mostly its tons & tons of tools just all over his house. You walk in his attic and its the same exact thing. I can't even tell you how many times I've "borrowed" a tool from him and he forgets I even have it. So I just wind up keeping them because I feel like I'm doing him a favor lol.

Funniest part is after all these years I still couldn't say exactly what he does. I think he manages servers for large businesses like kodak, dunkin donuts and walgreens but I never see him work, so its confusing.

This doesn't exactly relate to internet marketing but I thought it may be inspiring for others. There are MANY other things you can do outside the scope of marketing (business in general) that can be passively lucrative. And although my brother doesn't seem to work now, I know he busted his ass for a good 10 years to get to where he is today. So you can make good money doing a lot of different things, its just a matter of how smart you can work imo.

So is it safe to say he's not a minimalist then?

@RedShifted Ask for some lessons to your brothers :p He probably does money with SEO so once you do the "hard work" of making a site (yes it's hard, but for people that have high budgets all they have to do is find a niche, then you can outsource all the back linking and articles) and then just 'wait' for the money to come in. But seriously, ask for lessons, I'm sure they will help you

    Thanks for sharing

I've been working full time since 2006. Everyone advises to get a job but there is nothing like the IM lifestyle. Biggest obstacle in this game is RESEARCH.

Become really good at finding out what people need. You are more of a cool friend who sells things than a marketer. It helps build the right mindset.

    Forget what everyone else thinks.

Just be realistic with your income and success .... in terms of long term stability.

I see a lot of people put up a few micro niche sites, begin making maybe a hundred bucks a day and decide they've got it all figured out and quit their full-time jobs.

IMO that's just irresponsible and foolish. Unless you have a brand that is not completely reliant on search traffic and adsense clicks here and there....well....we've all seen what Penguin did.

yes, there are guys that depend 100% of google and then when they change something they freakout because going from 100$ a day to 0$ must be hard. Still, they learned their lesson

I'm using my internet marketing earnings to fund my college education. I'm going back to school for computer networking. I love computer networking. The CCNA was the first certification that i ever got. 2 incomes are so much better than one.

Well, when I started working for myself full-time as an internet marketer, I have to say that my family and friends were worried. Mainly because a) they didn't understand what I was doing and b) because they suspected it was a short-term thing.

Twelve years later and a) they still don't really understand what I do but b) they now know it's not a short-term thing!!
