In building my website, Do I set up advertising or do I get a large number of daily visitors first? As I understand it's almost impossible to get companies to advertise on your site if you don't have a large number of daily visitors but at the same time if you are building a site out of pocket it can be expensive to get your traffic up to an acceptable level. So what do you do first?

First thing I would suggest, concentrate on building your website up with good content. THEN concentrate on generating traffic. After you have these two puzzle pieces in place, thats when monetization is really effective.

I agree with Jared...you really have to build content and then traffic first.

Actually, you're supposed to throw the ads on their first but you need to have a lot of good content also to get relevant ads. If you throw ads on their 6 months after you start it people are going to start saying that they didn't sign up here just to get ads. Whereas if you already have ads, people will know it's already there.

Yes just dont inundate your site with ads that's all. However yes there has to be a fundamental reason why people come to, stay on and return to your site. Think of any site you like to visit.
So ultimately it is some form of content and this is what you need to develop to attract and keep attention.

Starting out, develop content, put up a blog and focus on targeting a specific audience. Focus first on building a list, market some affiliate products (via reviews, recommendations, articles, etc...) - you'll find that for the first while this will make you more money than advertising.

Playoff - Google Adsense is the simplest for you to use.

BUT .. I would not put it on my site until it had good content and good traffic. Unless you have those, you won't make any money anyway. So just build good content.

First put good content on your site, then put Google Adsense then start getting traffic to the site.

It cannot be monetize your site before you set it up in good condition with valued content. People need to see if your site is worth to advertise on. If your content is attractive then you can generate traffic to it, there are plenty of methods to get. PPC is one of them and good to get targeted traffic if you make it smartly. Of course it needs some money.

Whatever many hits is worthless if they don't stay on the site, but proceeds promptly. For this reason is important what is the quality of your content. When a traffic visit your site, your next assignment is to convert them into prospects then into buyers.

I'm not looking to build a commerce site as much as i am a sports information site. We have forums and the front page will have lots of articles about college football but as far actually selling stuff... not so much. So what kind of traffic is needed to generate a decent amount of proceeds from a website?

Mixing some good quality content with some ad sense adverts would probably be the best way to start. You can concentrate on adding your website with great content and mix in some ad sense ads to generate some income in the meantime. You could then shift your focus to generating some quality traffic with free traffic generation sources. Monetization would be much easier if you have some basic traffic to begin with!
