Is Wordpress.com similiar to Wordpress.org?

I'm wondering whether Wordpress.com (a blog) is the same as Wordpress.org
(the content management system you install on your host to build a website)

I'm asking this because I intend on building a website in the future, however, I don't want to just dig in and have a hard time, so I'm wondering if I should test things out on a wordpress.com blog, that is if they are the same to that when I do make my website, I would already have experience in wordpress.

Is Wordpress.com similar to Wordpress.org?

Thanks for all the replies!

It is not the same as you tell yourself. You can have a blog on Wordpress.com and at wordpress.org you can find free themes and plugins for your blog (WP Site).

thanks for replying! I appreciate it.

You post left me more confused however, so the majority of users out there who have a wordpress.com blog, also install wordpress.org (on who's server do they install this on?) and use use it to further enhance their wordpress.com blog?

Also, what If I have just bought a domain and hosting from Hostgator, and I install Wordpress.org on it, I can build my website with just wordpress.org? and would building it with wordpress.org be similiar to making a blog at wordpress.com?

once again, thanks for the help!

If you were to purchase your own domain and then get hosting, there would be a plugin that allows you to install Wordpress on your own domain. This means that when using your blog, it would have the functionality of Wordpress. When you purchase hosting from a hosting company (like host gator), the content for your site is stored on Hostgator's servers, which means you can use affiliate links and control the content on your site. If you were to use Wordpress' free platform, you wouldn't be allowed to use affiliate links, and Wordpress would have control of the content on your blog.

Wordpress.com is the free blogging platform. Using the free platform (where your stuff is hosted on the Wordpress servers), your site will be "yoursitename.wordpress.com." Wordpress.org is where you can get the latest news about what's happening with Wordpress, themes, plugins, and things of this nature. I hope this helps.

Wordpress.com is a site where you can set up a blog (yourname.wordpress.com). You don't own the domain name. It runs the Wordpress software and you can't use wordpress.com sites for commercial purpose.

Wordpress.org is the support site for anyone that runs the wordpress software on their own website, on their own domain on their own hosting account. Many web hosts have the facility for installing the wordpress software onto your domain automatically. You can also download the software from wordpress.org and install it manually.

Thank you everyone for the replies, they have been very helpful.

I just have one more question though.

Is the interface the same for both wordpress? Say I get really good at making wordpress.com blogs, with good themes, layout, desgins, etc.

And then I went and bought a domain, hosting and installed wordpress. Would the interface be familiar to me? would I be able to straight away use it like how I made my blog? Or is it different and I would need to practice to get the swing of things?

If I were you I would skip the wordpress.com part of your plan and go straight for installing Wordpress on a domain that's hosted. If you can't afford a domain and web hosting at this moment and are looking to test things out to get used to the platform, signup for a free hosting account and setup wordpress on it. Free hosting should only be used for testing purposes and not for the long run due to lack reliability. Get on a quality paid hosting solution as soon as you can. Best of luck!

I would just mention that if you're unsure about installing Wordpress on your own site for the first time, then I'm sure you'll be able to find some help on this forum. There are many free tutorials if you search on Google, and you can also get the job done via Fiverr if necessary,

    best wishes,

    Jon.
