From Being A Coal Miner, To Having John Chow's Phone Number!

I wanted to contribute to the forum and tell the new site owners not to give up with their dreams of making money online.

I am an ex coal miner. I used to go to work underground every day. Every morning at 4:30 I would wake up and get in an elevator shaft with the rest of the crew and go straight down into the mountain to make $32 an hr.

I will admit, I was making great money. I wasn't even thinking about blogging or the internet...actually, I come from a place where the internet is something foreign and unused. So I definitely wasn't thinking about making money on the internet two years ago.

However, one day I was unexpectedly ran over by a 20 ton piece of mining equipment permenately sheering my leg off at the kneecap.(Now I have a terminator leg)

Losing my job and needing money, I turned to the internet. I knew that people made money online with blogs, and they never worked hard, and it was made pretty fast, so that was the choice that I made...I wanted to be a blogger!

6 months later, I hadn't made a dime. But two years have passed, I have found my niche(building blogs and reselling them for a profit).

I wrote this post to encourage anyone who is starting a website for the first time. When I first talked to John Chow, he guided me with this little bit of info. He told me that it took 8 months before he made a single penny online. Now he makes over $40,000 per month.

Setting up a website to make money will take some time and patience. However, time is on your side. Google rewards your site for its age and the time that it has been online.

Coming from the coal mines to having John Chow's cell phone number saved in my list of contacts is a pretty far jump from where I started. If I can do this, anyone can do this. I'm not going to tell you that you need to build links, buy article spinners, or some trick to do SEO on your site.

What I will tell you is this: There is a LOT of information to process. You will find that there are many things to do in order to get recognized to where you want to be on the search engines. Slow and steady wins the race. Think about where you are putting your URL, and if I could tell you one thing: When you blog, blog for the visitor and not for Google. Your reader is the most important part of your blog or website. These are the people that will be clicking that Buy Now button on your site, not Google.

The message is this: Don't give up. When someone tells you that you can be making $1000 per day with a certain product, be wary of it. If it sounds too good to be true, guess what?? There are plenty of people that have been doing this far longer than I have and can guide you in the right direction. Pick a great mentor like I did in John Chow, and let them share their secrets with you...but don't give up. It will happen for you!!

There's a hell of a lot of sense in your post Wade, and you also have a good story. I whole heartedly agree with you that writing for the visitor rather than for a search engine is a wise, wise decision.

I wish you all the best for the future.

Wade, I am so sorry to hear about your accident. However, your attitude is simply amazing! Alot of people would have crumbled after going through something like that. Instead, you turned it into a heckuva lesson for anyone who reads your story (and is smart enough to take your advice!)

I'm glad you're doing something you enjoy and making a living off it to boot! Hopefully, this is only the beginning of your success!

Thanks to both of you! It's actually not too bad, I went and the company paid for the best procedures & I opted for a robotic leg & joint! It's pretty cool, I sound like a robot when I walk! It's funny going through airline metal detectors!

All in all I look at it as a blessing. I could have been crushed and killed. The blogging thing is just an added benefit! Wanted to encourage people not to give up on anything!

Well its people like the one's on this forum that got me to where I am today. I was totally ignorant of the internet 2 years ago. I still don't know everything, but I try to keep it simple, and do what I know. My buddy John has been helping me along the way too. He found my story interesting as well when I caught his eye on a post I did about a year and a half ago. I currently resurrected it to show my readers how important catchy titles are. It is called How I Got One Of The Internet's Most Successful Bloggers To Talk To Me. On thing that I have learned from John, no two things, is that you have to encourage your visitors to come and read your stuff. The other thing was what I posted up top, when I said don't write for Google, write for the reader. That is 100% John Chow's idea, and it has helped me tremendously.

Writing catchy titles to wrangle new readers is very important in keeping your site fresh and new. Another good one(I think) is Don't Get Caught By the Evil Blog: Ways To Tell If Your Blog is Evil This one got so popular that I started a trend called #EvilBlog!

That's an excellent post Wade. It's great to hear you are taking what happened to you as a blessing and not an impediment. I wish you all the best of luck in the future. Sounds like you've carved a slice for yourself and I'm sure it'll grow bigger with time and work you put into it.

Most definitely! There was so much stuff for me to learn. I had no idea what a backlink was, and I thought a "Tweet" was something Barbera Walters fed her dog! In order to create a successful business online, you not only have to implement several technical strategies, but you also have to do it while appeasing the reader!

If I knew how many people on here would be interested, I would write an ebook about it. Throw some tips on blogging that I learned on the way and how I get new blogs to position #1 on Google and resell them for profit.

Long ways from mining coal. How many people would be interested in this? I'm not sure that my life story is very interesting. lol! There are plenty of people that know far more than I do...I don't profess to be an expert..but I don't mind helping anyone that I can that needs it either.

On that note, I have seen threads here where people ask about finding a mentor. My answer to this question is this: Be forward and ask them to be your mentor. If he asks for payment, then his heart is not in the right place to truly help you. Find someone willing to do this free.

I vow that whenever(if ever) I make it to the top, to help anyone that asks me for it.

Back to the other thing...who would be interested in an ebook of this. Throw out what you would like me to include in it like: what social media strategies do I use to get traffic, how did I get into blogging...I don't know, this may not even be an interest to anyone, but if enough people ask for it, I would take some time and do it.

Forget about an ebook. This is webinar-material.

Record a webinar with your story and pitch an "How I Got Started" offer at the end of the webinar.

You *will* make more out of that. Guaranteed.

Like I said before, I'm no pro. I have never done a webinar and would not know how to go about it. Thinking that an ebook sold as a WSO on the forums herre would probably work out better. Besides, my accent is so hillbilly that I may be embarrassed to talk in a video.

I have thought about doing YouTube videos on my blog posts to make the reader feel more acquainted with me, but I feel that my stupid accent would make me sound dumb and turn people off. Maybe this is crazy, I don't know. I just want my followers and subscribers to trust me for my information that I give them and if they hear my voice I am afraid that I will lose a lot of them because of profiling.

Is that crazy or what?? lol.

            Hey Wade,

I read your terrific story and all the really nice things people have said about you, your spirit and your tenacity. And I agree with them all.

But I nearly fell off my chair laughing when you said you wouldn't feel too sure about doing a video because your accent is so 'hillbilly".

I conjured up an image of Jed Clampett (from the Beverley Hillbillies - though many here would be too young to remember them) doing this video, and thought it would be really cool.

I'm sure your accent is fine friend, and your story is even better.

            All the best mate,
            Paul

PS - Does John still do coaching do you know?

My accent is hillbilly! I say Paints instead of pants, really lazy words and I cant get around them. This is why I think I would be more interested in doing ebooks instead.

About John, I don't think he ever mentored...I just kept emailing him, until he finally emailed me with an answer. Two weeks later, I did the same thing, until finally we started talking regularly, then through skype, then finally phone. He wants me to speak at a blogging seminar that he is doing in Canada...but I am faced with the same thing I just talked about...my stupid accent! lol! But I'm doing it! I don't care...because if I can get a guy like John Chow to back me like this, I will end up having a HUGE following after this!

ha, your accent could really work for you. "Hey, if a hick coal miner like me did it, you can too!" (no offense to you!) But people pay more attention to real people. If you can cause them to think, gee, he can do it, maybe I can too! You'd be tremendously inspiring and be able to connect even better with people than say, some neutral news anchor man making the pitch.

            Good luck!

Great story. The real lesson is that the #1 obstacle most people that prevents them from the VICTORY and SUCCESS they are looking for is their MENTALITY. Most people operate out of Fear. To win, you have to operate out of DESIRE. Most people deal with problems by running away or changing the subject. Winners FIGHT.

Real success in affiliate marketing begins with winning the war against one's old mentality first.

I congratulate you on your success and may you continue to get what's coming to you.

I love your story of not to give up in the internet business. Most people thought internet business is those quick get rich scheme.

I just started a blog and what you written really make sense. I always think of how to be more 'visible' in google and everytime I start a post, I always search for popular keywords. At times, I don't find my post interesting coz I'm being restricted by the 'keywords'.

I should start writing for visitors, make them want to read my blog. I guess, sometimes too much theory or information may make my blog boring? correct me if Im wrong. I should include some elements sharing with people a little more about myself.

I have learned something today. People like interesting stories about you. Opening up to your audience and making yourself vulnerable to them is a great way to get them coming back.

Writing for my reader is the best thing that I have ever done. Forget Google. Google follows people, and people love great content. I have had content ranked on the first page of Google without having a single backlink to that site! Implementing a strategy that is focused on your reader is the best way to getting a post to go viral.

I would be interested in this if I knew that I had an audience for it.

On another note, the accident was a turning point in my life. Sometimes drastic things have to happen to you before you can turn your life around for the better. For me, it was a serious accident. If that hadn't happened to me, I would still be making mediocre money working a mediocre job.

I agree with #19. Keep my name for your list and PM me when the time comes(Reasonably priced). I have basic skills but have always heard "Duplicate success". True, honest success seems to be harder and harder to find.

Exceptional story Wade, one that inspires me indeed.
I've been using the web from a very young age and I'm very keen in becoming a blogger/Internet marketer. This story and encouragement is good for people like me.

I'm the type of person who likes to research a lot before going into something, instead of just going into it and learning from my mistakes. I find this holds me back in any route I choose to take to make money online. I have a dream to be my own boss, earn my own money, work when I want and ultimately make a living from the internet.

I have decided on loads of career paths over the last couple of years and then got bored and moved to something else. Let me tell you, its extremely frustrating not being able to just put my words and thoughts into action.

I've had notions of becoming a freelance writer, games journalist and many other writing routes. I have some experience in both of those paths. Lately I've taught myself HTML & CSS because I wanted to be a web designer/developer. I can't tell you how much I've done extensive research and reading articles online in order to fill my brain with the knowledge to do this things.

I'm aware that learning some web design will help me in my chosen career path this time round. I want to be a blogger and do affiliate marketing and earn a living from these two passions I have.

I would really love to find a mentor and receive help and guidance to start earning online.
Your story is an inspiration and I must say well done to you for grabbing the opportunity.

    Thanks for your inspiration.

  • Brilliant story, thank you for sharing.

I can definitaly relate. I didn't make a single penny for my first 5 months. Those 5 months were EASILY the hardest times.

Newbies, it is possible, we're not all lying for fun.

Wade, thanks for the inspiring post. No wonder people like you and want to help you.

Just your attitude is worth millions. Of course, your cool robotic leg makes you irresistible, too.

I love your story Wade. And having lived in Virginia for a number of years (Giles County), you story really struck a chord for me.

You certainly have a positive attitude and that is infectious.
The fact that you are open to helping others shows the type of person you are.

You really have so many ways to go with your Internet Marketing, I just urge you to remain focused and complete one project at a time before losing the path.

What you said earlier in this thread is a true take away for everyone who markets on and off line:

I have learned something today. People like interesting stories about you. Opening up to your audience and making yourself vulnerable to them is a great way to get them coming back.
    Outstanding advice! Thanks my friend.

    Onward and upward!

Giles Co...I know where that is. I live in Tazewell Co, thanks for the kind words.

I DO want to help people. I have said it so many times, I'm no pro, but I don't mind sharing what little knowledge that I have to make $5,500 monthly with someone else.

That was a very nice thing to say. Thanks!

I would say that I go about IM in a very weird way. Now, I pretty much do it like everyone else does, but when I first started I did it backwards with good success too.

The leg thing actually pushed me out of a job. Having no money pushed me into the internet business. I ended up blogging because I have always loved to write. If there is anything anyone should take from this thread is to never give up, and keep your reader first by providing great content always.
