I just purchased my domain, now my question

I just purchased my domain through godaddy. This might be a stupid question but I'm new so I'll ask anyway. I'm planning on creating my website, but I also plan to have a squeeze page or landing page to build a list. I have purchased this domain, let's say http://mynewdomain.com, do i need to purchase another domain for my squeeze page? I guess how do I create mynewdomain.com/optinpage?

I'm really happy I made this first move (get my domain, and later I'm getting hosting through hostgator, then get an aweber account. I know I will have quite a few questions so I'm happy to be a part of this forum;.

No, you don't need to purchase another domain to setup a landing page.

You can just upload your landing page (optinpage.html) via an FTP program like Filezilla into your main directory.

index.html or index.php will be the homepage for your domain. You can name your squeeze/landing page anything you want.

I don't know about anyone else, but I always found it easier to think of the website folder structure as the same as the one on my computer (it is, after all, just a computer / server that stores a web site).

So you could have something like:

index.html ----> This would be the first page that is loaded when someone goes to your site

    then you could also have

yourdomain.com/offer --------> this would be in your file manager as a folder called 'offer', and inside it you would have another index.html, which would be loaded when someone visits the link.

I hope I haven't confused things further for you. If you need a hand, PM me, I'd be happy to help .

your question is not stupid at all, it is very pertinent.
A domain name is simply a "human readable" name which points to your server.
Under the covers, there's a program called a "name server" which translates
your domain name to its IP address.
Because the Internet does not work with names, but with IP numbers.
(each server in the global network has a "unique" IP, so traffic can be directed
    to/from it)
    Example:
    human-readable domain name: google.com
    Internet IP: 173.194.43.46

So domain name is only "your address" in the global network.

At that address is a computer box.
In that computer hardware lives a web server (example: Apache)
On that Apache server lives "sites", one of which is yours.
Apache's job is to serve the pages of your site to whoever requests it.
The "requester" is what we call a web-client: firefox, chrome, IExplorer
(while Apache is a server ... so you see a client-server relation here)

Now, squeeze pages, sales pages and all that are pages inside your site.
Or: a "web site" is simply a group of pages.
A "web page" is a computer file usually written in the HTML language
(with other languages added when needed: css, javascript, server-scripting-langs, etc.)

This site sometimes uses another piece of software do make the site-making
process easier: WordPress (WP). You don't "really" need WP, but
that's what most on this forum are using. WP is written in the PHP language,
but essentially what it does is that Apache eventually translates that into HTML
and sends the HTML result to the client.

Now, if you think this is complicated and are already reaching for
that Tylenol because of a starting headache, well you're about right.
This is complicated, especially at the beginning.
Do you really need to know all this in order to do Internet Marketing?
Not really, as all that I have described so far has nothing to do with IM.

But I am glad that you posed this question, as you are confirming my
own assumption: I am currently working on something
to handle this exact problem you are hinting.
I won't mention it here, as apparently is bad style on this forum to
    over-self-promote,
and I do want to respect the forum rules. But just want to say that there
is a big learning curve ahead of you, but you can do it.
But there are also some mountain cable cars under construction to
alleviate/quicken the exact learning climb which which you are facing.
Still, it's always a good thing to know how things work...

hope this helped you a bit to see clearer how this Internet thingie works...
    cheers!

Thank you so much! i get it now. I am pretty technical compared to others but I'm not familiar at all in creating websites so I just wanted to ask. All answers here are pretty good and I really appreciate all the input. Hope I can get this working by the end of the week. I just need to worry about traffic after. This forum is such a great place for people like me. I can't wait to get it up and running.

yope, good place to be around others who walked the same path as you are, and ask for advice if you hit a wall in the way (you will find a few of those, that's pretty unavoidable, but that's part of the learning experience, haha).
Yes, you need to have something to send your traffic to, first.
        Best of luck!

    Install two Wordpress installations.

Install one on the root domain i.e. www.yourdomain.com
For this Wordpress installation just use a normal Wordpress theme.

Install another on a subdirectory i.e. something like www.yourdomain.com/go
For this Wordpress installation use OptimizePress as the theme.

This way you can a blog on the main site and then your squeeze pages on a subdirectory.

Ex. my site's blog is on moneytreesmedia.com
(This blog was created using the theme "Headway")

But my squeeze pages are all on moneytreesmedia.com/videocashsecrets
(This squeeze page was created using the theme "Optimize Press")

    Hope this helps!

I would use word press if you can. Best to you.
      Roger
The "webhosting199" site you suggest looks a bit amateurish and unprofessional, sorry to say. You know the saying: you never have a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. Perhaps for someone who starts out and can not cough a few bucks more, that host might do. I personally prefer to co-locate my own box in a local data-center, it's a bit more expensive, but I get *total* control over my server, I know it's physically secured and protected 24/7, and all that stuff. I had to deal with the data-center staff, and had only great experience with them, and I would not switch just to save a few bucks.

My point being: don't focus on the price alone, there are other more important metrics you should also consider, else you might regret it sometimes in the future.

Case-in-point: go-daddy. Big humongous domain-name company. Went with their $.99 offers few years back, bought a bunch of those, but ended up coughing much more green down the line, the got my email spammed by them for 6 months straight, ended up switching to namecheap, and am very happy since.

Yeah, maybe this is a good advice: ask around what other warriors are using, how they liked their experience with their provider, that stuff. There's no guarantees that you'll be just as happy, but might give you some hints.

Btw, the best FTP client for Mozilla that I use is FireZilla (use it with FireFox).

I haven't been able to find a good one for Chrome yet, but using FireZilla is alot easier than opening a different FTP application IMO.

Just get hosting set up and you can use the same domain for the squeeze page.

    Good luck!

    domain
    hosting
    web pages

Domain points to your host, hosting hosts your web pages on that domain. You just need to create your web pages. You can have as many pages you want on a domain.

It is just like a folder on your filesystem...except it's on a remote server.
Typically it would be something like this:

    /yourusername/mydomain.com/html/index.html
    /yourusername/mydomain.com/html/sales.html

Also, I would avoid hostgator. You're starting out, so I would go with Dreamhost.

Yes, I used them and found them to be rather slow in response time. But for a cheap web host I guess they are ok. I like mediatemple much better than any of the shared hosting solutions

    Hey spmarketer,

No you don't have to purchase another domain... there's 2 ways you can do it from here...

    1. Just name your squeeze page "index.html" and upload it to your Hostgator server. The search engines always look for the "index" page as the default landing page... so everytime someone types in 'http://yoursite.com' they will be directed straight to the "index.html" page - your squeeze page - this means every visitor who searches will hit your squeeze page

If you don't want every visitor to hit the 'squeeze page' then...

    2. You would name the page something like "http://yoursite.com/squeezepage.html' and then get specific visitors to that page by having a page or link on a page to the squeeze.

The 1st method is great if you setting up a site solely for list building as the 'squeeze' is all you want the visitor to see, so leave it as the 'index.html'

The 2nd method is good is you have a lot of content and other pages and want to eventually bring your visitor thru content on to your 'squeeze'

I teach people how to build a squeeze page and create passive income online... you can check it all for free via my signature below... just login to Facebook and hit the link to watch 2 very helpful videos.

    Hope this helps

You don't need a new domain name for your opt-in page.

There are actually a few methods on how to have a blog and opt in page on the same domain name.

I'm not sure whether there's already have a wordpress plugin out there for you to create your opt-in page inside your wordpress, but I'm actually testing this squeeze page plugin for wordpress where you can create your squeeze page within the same wordpress blog so you don't need to install another wordpress or create html page. It's brilliant actually.

I'm not sure when he'll launch this plugin but I'll keep you guys updated.

Simply put, create the squeeze page, name it whatever you want.html/.htm , upload it in the active directory and start putting links that direct people from index to squeeze.html and back .. you can have as many as you want. after you get the hang of it, start using a portal like WordPress, Joomla etc
