hosting multiple sites?

Hey guys quick question. I'm moving on to my second site and I want to get it hosted without spending a lot more money. I hear you can use host gators sub domains to do this, but i keep getting it as:

newsite.oldsite.com

is there a way to get it so I can have newsite.com without having the extra on there so it comes up in google searches as such? or do i need to get a seperate hosting service for it?

upgrade to Reseller account & you will have a separate cpanel for every domain you have

    Hope it helps,

I'd like to point out that while everyone says don't use a reseller account, as a web host, I can tell you that using a reseller account for hosting multiple sites is going to be better for you.

First, you'll be able to better organize each website.

Second, this will aid in better security. If one site gets compromised, it's only that site in most cases. If you have a shared plan, then put 20 addon domains on it each site is at risk.

Third, resources. Should one of your sites start using a ton of CPU/Memory, the entire account will be suspended, including every single website hosted under that account if you use add on domains. With a reseller account, each website is isolated & runs as its own user.

If you plan on growing with more sites, start off the correct way.

You don't need a reseller account. If you have the Baby Gator plan, you can host "unlimited" domains. I have one account and tens of sites hosted there. It shows up in the database as newsite.oldsite.com, but when you install WordPress, you have the option to make it just newsite.com.

How do you set it so it's just oldsite.com? Do I do it in wordpress after installation?

Hi leetpete, hotgator should allow you to host multiple domains from the one hosting account. Just register another domain, go under cpanel and click addon domians. Then add the domian that you just registered. Also dont forget to setup the namesrevers correctly.

I believe that you are correct you do not need a resellers account to add an unlimited amount of domains to your hosting account.

I've been using Hostgator for a few years and had no idea you could do that. Learn something new everyday I suppose..

You need to sign up at least baby plan at hostgator. You will be able to have one hosting and multiple domains. If you have any queries, you can always refer to the operators at hostgator. They are very helpful to settle your problems for you.

You need to add any new domains as an ADD-ON domain not a subdomain. Then they will work exactly as you want them to.

I have 3 accounts with hostgator. But that's cause a few of my pages get a ton of traffic.

But just doing an addon like mentioned above will solve the problem.

Seems pretty straight forward just make sure your plan (which I believe host gators should) allows you to do host multiple domains, go buy your 2nd domain name and set it up that way.

Also I agree with kingfish about using reseller accounts it can help you when you maintaining a large amount of sites and provides a lot of extra benefits. However in this scenario I do not think that is the case.

    Good luck!

Also if you ever plan on selling websites it's much easy when you have a reseller account with each website on its own cPanel account.
