How do I close down my site?

I am ready to close down my site and move all content to a new domain. How do I go about doing that (in simplest, non-techie terms please?)

And then, how do I make sure it is all removed from searches so my content, once placed on the new site, will not look like it is copied?

I use Hostgator.

Thanks.

Is the domain you want to shut down a addon domain or Is It your primary domain. If It's an addon domain just unassign the domain.

If the domain you want to close Is your primary domain you will have to call your hosting company for that.

Don't worry about the search engines. Google will eventually de Index all the content that was on your old domain.

I don't know who you are hosted with, but I believe HostGator offer a transfer service free of charge if you are with them?

If both domains are pointed to your Hostgator server, you can just select all files and move them to the new domain in the File Manager. If it's a Wordpress site, you will need to edit the database to reflect the new domain.

I've got complete transfer instructions here
    http://domainingdiva.com/transfer.pdf

Once it is moved, just do a 301 from the old domain to the new domain and Google will know the site has moved.

The simplest way is to use a cpanel backup. Under cPAnel, go to backups, download/generate a full backup. Once it is complete, download it and you can move it to your new host who will restore it for you. Doesn't take long at all.

Do not delete the entire site at first. Delete the content. This will return a 404 code to your deleted articles.
Then go to webmaster tools and as google to remove your links from it's cache and index.Google will start removing your links within a few days.
The problem is, your deleted content will still appear in search results on RSS and directory sites, if you submitted your site to any of them earlier.

I mainly am considering getting a new domain because I have some links that Google has warned are "unnatural". Some were from a link package I bought last year and some I just am not sure where they came from. Not thousands and thousands, maybe 600. I don't have a lot of traffic, so I thought maybe getting a new domain would be the best solution at this point.

Well, you asked about how to transfer your site content to a new site. The easiest and fastest way that I know is to use a product like Back Up Creator. You install the plugin on your old site and click save a copy of the site. The file will be saved to your computer in a zip file. Then you install the plugin on your new site and upload the zip file, then activate it. The new site will look exactly like your old site and you can make the changes to reflect the new domain name in the settings section of your dashboard.

This whole procedure will take only 5 -10 minutes. I am assuming you are talking about a WP site. With a tutorial or two you can use the backup software over and over again.

Contact me if you have questions.
    Best wishes,
    Carole

HI, You are asking about a website left down and the contents will have used in a new site which is going to be administrated by the same person. If my understanding is right, I strongly say that you can do it by registering a new domain with some other registrars like Whoisxy.com only if the existing site was maintained by a same administrator.
