Not important at all. An all of my promotions... I would rather send my prospects directly to my sales letter or squeeze page before i send them to Facebook or Twitter.

I find Facebook and twitter very important to my business the fact that you can use these to build relationships with your customers is quite frankly incredible you can have a interaction with them daily and it doesn't always have to be about business.

Let's face it the search engines are moving more and more towards social media and we all know the effect that re-tweets can have on your ranking this just goes to show how important social media should be to any business online.

I feel that eventually Google will try to move away from backlinks to measure a sites popularity and use social media instead so it's better to have an active social media account in your niche so that you are ready for this slow revolution in Google's algorithm

I tried to add followers to my twitter account every day and remove people that are not following back roughly every 2 to 3 days.

Regarding Facebook I tried to add fresh content that people will enjoy and find useful in all my niches roughly 3 times a day as this keeps me active in their newsfeed.

For me they aren't important at all. I rather have email subscribers
than Facebook fans and Twitter followers.

I think of them only as a bonus if I run out of opportunities for getting customers.

    • Facebook is an excellent tool for offline businesses, especially in a narrowly defined market. In the IM world though, I haven't had as much success.

I have never used Twitter once, I know it works, just never needed it, had enough good stuff going on.

As far as the communication process goes, social media is the best way to involve yourself with your customers/clients/fans and everything in-between.

      Cheers,
      Chris

I haven't really done anything with either as far as business goes. To me they are really only useful for their original intended purpose: social interaction with friends and like minded people.

I've attempted to use them both several times, but I've never actually made a single penny off of them. I don't even find them useful for social interaction anymore.

I do, however, find them useful when I'm looking for pix of LOLCatz.

Promoting your site throgh Facebookis very good, Facebook has many people who can visit your site, its the biggest social network. I am not familiar with Twitter, is not easy to descripe what I ampromoting with only a few characters.

I am still to see any valuable impact of either of these platforms on my business.

Problem is, Twitter is now just a mass of advertising messages, and I really do hate the UI it imposes. I was recently asked to be a panelist on a Q&A session on there, but the pace of it was so fast, it was of no use.

As for Facebook, I am a fan of a few groups, but do I ever look at these pages? No, there are better places where I can go.

I only have a presence on there for the reasons Rob stated above.

And what Joe states is perfectly true - these platforms were never intended for marketing and selling - I know myself, when I go on it is for social interaction (and that is rarely) or to organise a get together of friends - the last thing on my mind is to sign up anywhere, or purchase something someone is peddling.

I think they're both overrated. There's so much noise there it's hard to get your message across.

Social Networking sites become very important only if they're the only source of traffic for your site. But they're actually just like a bonus to the variety of other stuffs that you can use to drive traffic to your website. Like simple back linking or forum posting.

Yes, it's important for me to develop some of the sites I work on. But not at all for certain types (which do not give priority to social media)
I have several social media accounts, and continued to be active in order to get people noticed about site(s) currently I work on. Just like interacting with others as general, share a links or some promotional in certain occasions.

Even though some people seem to differ my opinion is that Social Networks are important in promoting your sites, especially those new ones. I don't think you can keep having good result without them.

Facebook and Twitter can play a role to get targeted visitor but I don't think, social networking site will help you to make much money.

Both of this may be use to build a community related to your business.

I use Facebook to communicate with family and friends only and I read some interesting people on Twitter in the evenings for entertainment value only.
