Launches/Email Marketing Becoming Less Effective?

Hi guys,

I was talking to my mastermind group today and we were chatting about how recent launches have not been performing as well as in the past. I have also noticed a significant decline in email open rates in the past few months. (I am an experienced marketer and this is the first time I've been genuinely concerned about a drop in response.)

My feeling is that we have reached a point of such information overload that previous methods are no longer working as well as they used to.

I don't think direct marketing or internet marketing will ever die, but our marketing methods will have to evolve.

My questions are ...

Have you also seen declines in response?
What do you think the future of internet/direct marketing is?

I know social media is all the rage, but to be honest, I'm not getting nearly the same response from it that I do from email. So what is the best way to cut through the clutter and get through to people???

I'd love to hear some discussion on this.

Thanks!

Have you tried starting a new list and comparing your metrics from the new sign ups to the metrics from your aged list?

If the majority of your sign ups are from JV partners whose audience has "been around the block", I could see where there may be a certain level of "Launch Immunity". But if you're continuously getting new sign ups of relative "newbies" you'll have better luck.

The niche you're targeting will make a difference too. Over exposure to any marketing tactic or strategy, regardless of niche, is going to require a certain level of adaptation and ingenuity.

Nothing significant...but I'm not targeting the "IM niche" and don't rely heavily on the "launch" formula.

It has worked for years and will continue to work...kinda like gravity.

So what is the best way to cut through the clutter and get through to people???
Don't get lumped in with the clutter. Become someone that your audience knows, likes, and trusts.

No doubt the MMO niche is saturated with crap these days. People don't open their emails anymore because they forget who are the good marketers and the bad ones. This is true, i talk from experience because that's what I do. I open very few emails these days because I simply don't need to be given a million and one different bits of advice from many marketers.

In saying that though, there are a select few (1 0r 3) that I always open because I know the information is directly related to where my head is at the moment.

The point: Open rates have dropped considerably for the marketers that don't build a solid relationship with their subs from the beginning. Open rates have dropped for the marketers that don't have a specific avatar of their ideal prospect. Open rates have dropped considerably for the marketers that simply don't stand out from the crowd.

Actually, thinking of it in the way of people not opening emails anymore is short sighted. You should be asking NOT why they aren't opening emails in general, but why they are NOT opening YOUR emails.

There's a lot of truth in that. As you said, there are a lot of people who sign up for every single whiz bang report, etc. in the IM niche. Eventually, it becomes easier for them to just ignore the messages (or come to WF to complain about getting spammed) than to go to the effort of unsubscribing from all those lists.

So they'll just stay on those lists and ignore the messages, which decreases open rates.

That's absolutely true. Just look at the few recent ones promising you pie in the sky again, and geared only at pushing a few upsells to the product that "will make you rich by itself, so the add-on is totally optional, but if you want to get rich quicker, you should buy this one and keep your eyes on the next one which will send you to Hawaii while earning you piles of cash on autopilot. Just $997 one payment opens you the gates to millions overnight!"

Very few of them do, now. Once they sell to you they keep in touch only to push more of their stuff to you.

This might be a result of using pre-written, often badly formatted, autoresponder messages from the affiliate programs. It's really a shame what those people do recently. Spelling errors, name macros mixed, and wording that will trigger a spam filter five miles away.

You MUST stand out of the crowd to have your e-mails open, to make people look forward to the next message from you. Even if you use ready made letters - spice them up with some personal touch, show yourself, not the product.

On the other hand, if you are an affiliate only and have never used the product yourself, how can you promote it? How do you know if it works or not? How do you know if it's worth its price?

And the difference between an Internet Marketer and an Internet Peddler is that the former get their e-mails opened far more often that the latter.

My open rates are way above average. With that said, I write my own stuff and know what my list responds to. Many of them have been burned in the past, so instead of promoting something I know doesn't work, I tell them the truth and offer something legitimate.

I suppose these things do happen from time to time and I do think new and exciting methods are always needed as people do become blind to the every day Emails we marketers send out to our susbscribers.

I know some of the big marketers have been using those webinars as away to engage their audiences but again it is getting those subscribers to open the Emails in the first place.

It is a great challenge to us all and I am sure if we create a mastermind group we can all here at the W.F. come up with something that gets those open rates up once again.

Is there such a place here already?

what you have to understand is that your never going to please everyone

it doesnt mater how hard to you try some people will just never like the way you market, sell, brand yourself etc etc

it`s just one of those things

these are the people that won`t open your emails

    however....

at the other end of the scale are the people that love your stuff and like reading your emails

as long as you give out good stuff you will without a doubt start to build loyal fans which open every email. I have found this and these are the people which you should look after

The key is to focus on these type of people and not get too hung up about the ones that don`t open or read your stuff

get rid of the "non openers" on a regular basis and just keep building your loyal fans and you won`t get too many problems with low open rates

email marketing is far from dead and is still extremely effective and still the best way to sell but you do have to build a list of loyal fans NOT just "leads" or "subscribers"
