New Here: Ques on reposting of articles

Hi all
New to posting here however been reading and learning as much as I can from this forum (which I recently found...great forum!). I'm looking to start a blog and have researched how I want to structure it (via custom wordpress template), the content, etc. Initially it will serve as an informational blog within the fitness industry. As I built credibility and a fan base I will look into monetizing it (have some ideas but first things first). I'm now researching how to efficiently develop and launch it etc which leads me to this first question.

I've been following a few of the most well known blogs within this niche of the fitness industry (there are only a handful that most follow). Their articles are great and provide a wonderful learning experience. Just recently I noticed a couple of those blogs' articles are reposts from articles in magazines, findarticles, etc. Yes they do give full credit at the end (author, copyright, date, location etc). The articles are verbatim however these blogs re-structure them aesthetically with pictures. Otherwise everything is the same even down to the credits given (in other words the original article gives the credit a certain way and these blogs did the same).

OK enough of the long winded background. The question is, is this OK to do? I've heard 2 different camps on this. Some say yes, others say no. Seeing that these 2 blogs in particular are the main go to ones, very very well known and respected in the industry, and with TONS of followers, It appears to me that it's OK. However would like your thoughts and opinions on that.

Thanks much for your inputs.

What you are describing is "Article Syndication." There are many of us here who make our living this way. We write high quality articles, post them first to our own websites/blogs, then pass them on, with a resource box added, to our syndication partners.

They in turn publish these articles on their websites, in their newsletters and in their print media, and we receive high quality, very focused traffic from their readers/followers.

Its ok if you get them from a source that specifcally allows syndication in their terms of use. Otherwise its a copyright violation if you don't get permission.

Basically, yes, if they're taken from article directories.

That's the purpose of article directories. By putting articles into them, the authors are hoping to attract re-publishers and are effectively saying "Please re-post this on your own site or in your ezine, subject to this site's terms of service". (And those terms of service will always say that you need to take the article in its entirety, including the live links at the end, and so on).

But whenever in doubt, always check the terms of service of the site on which you find them.

That's for a variety of reasons. Many are confused about it. Even some people who use article directories don't quite understand that that's what they're there for. And other people think that some sites which aren't article directories at all are article directories.

Whether you can take an article from a site and re-publish it will be specified in the terms of service, though. If it doesn't say that you can, then you can't. It's about as simple as that.

Many thanks for the quick replies. All your replies make perfect sense and now I understand. AND learned some things in the process (haha...thanks again!). I did not realize that articles from article directories are OK to re-post (again I'm new and learning).

In regards to this comment ""Please re-post this on your own site or in your ezine, subject to this site's terms of service"...do you mean that particular article directory's TOS?

    Thanks again all!

      Yes, exactly.

When an author puts a copy of an article in an article directory, then the terms on which it's available (from that source, anyway - it may be in other places, too, but that's up to the author) are that directory's TOS.

Unfortunately, it isn't always trivially easy to tell whether or not a site is an article directory, and you can sometimes actually need to look at their TOS even just to tell that: there are some places that even have the word "articles" in their site's title and url that are not article directories at all (such as "Street Articles" - many people, including even some who post their articles there, think it's an article directory, but it isn't). They don't always make it easy for you!

Would anyone be willing to give me a few good article directories I can look at that allow the articles there to be re-posted?

    Thanks much!

Oh and I saw on one directory that they have a requirement such as:
"You have permission to publish this article electronically or in print, free of charge, as long as you leave the article title, author name, body and resource box intact"

Does this mean I just leave the wording as is without changes but I can adjust font type, font size, highlights, etc ( essentially the aesthetic looks of the article as opposed to boring paragraph form)?

    Thanks
