Are you at a disadvantage if...

You don't own any of the following?

  • Smartphone
  • Laptop
  • Outdated hardware/software (it's functional, but not top of the line)
I own a dilapidated old laptop, that for the most part is functional and does what I want, but it could be better. It's on the list of things to update, but those gosh darn kids keep spending my money, so, heh. I also do not own a smartphone, and I have no idea what apps do/are. I'm apparently living in a time warp of about the year 2002. :p

Do you think your business is at a greater disadvantage if you don't own current technology, or does it not matter? Will an offline business be more successful than an online business for example? I am curious.

I think it does matter and getting a decent computer should be your first order of business. Does not have to be "great" like an expensive mac. I own an incredble PC that I love which was only $400.

A computer is really like an instrument and a really cheap old musical instrument will always, always make it more difficult to learn.

Smartphone does not matter at all.

Charlotte, IMO that stuff only matters if you play in the techie niches.

Once your content is online, no one knows how it got there (except maybe the 'black helicopter' guys, and if you are on their radar you have bigger problems than an older computer...)

I think it would totally depend on what you are doing.

If you are just posting an article or two a day then you really don't need much. If you want to produce videos or offer webinars, etc. then you are going to need good equipment.

I've got a dumb phone, no laptop and I'm upgrading much of my DOS-based software.

Really, no smart phone. Desktop computer. And I really am getting up to speed with a bunch of new software. I work lots of hours behind my desk. When I go out I don't want to think about bandwidth or what's happening online.

Of course, when I get back home I immediately fire up the computer to see what's what.

To answer your question, I don't think you need to be super connected to be successful. If your business requires you to keep in touch with a bunch of assistants, that might be different. But as a writer that's not necessary for me.

I'd say no. I started using a smart phone just this year. When I go out to work, I leave the Satellite at home and use an old IBM R50. That sucker came out in '04 and hasn't been upgraded since '06. No one can tell the difference . Speed and less RAM can bea bother for certain tasks (video), but I feel other than that old technology can still accomplish what it needs to.

Depending on how you market, it's not the device that counts but access to the Internet. We're in an increasingly cloud-based world and devices matter less and less. Also, local software is becoming obsolete.
