Twitter: Better to follow a few select people or everyone?

I'm new to Twitter and i'm trying to figure out how all this works.

So I've been following lots and lots of people with the hope that they will follow me back and thus I'll create a huge following. Is that a good plan?

Or should I just follow the people I REALLY care about hearing from? and if so how will I get more people to follow me?

Thanks

There are a lot of people that will say you should follow anyone that follows you.

I think your best option is to use Twitter Search or Twellow :: Twitter Search Directory, Twitter Search Engine and search for people talking about subjects your are interested in and want to talk about.

If you follow them, most will follow you back and your shared topic interests will give you something to talk about.

Every word of your tweet is searchable. So if you want followers from other topics, just start tweeting about it, and people will start to follow you if you like the tweet.

Go to Mr. Tweet -> Your Personal Networking Assistant! and set up an account. It will help you find great people to follow.

You can also go to http://twist.flaptor.com for find the hottest topic trends and start tweeting about them. This will expose you to a lot of people and can build your followers quickly.

I think massively following people is a bad idea.

#1, you can't tell if they are worth following in the first place
#2, you have no idea if you have anything in common
#3, you don't give yourself time to connect with the people that follow you at present.

I prefer to slowly add followers, maybe 100 every week or so. I can connect with everyone this way and can choose who I want on my list. I'd rather have a list of 1000 targeted followers that I interact with than 10k that are a mix of spammers, inactive users, and people that have no idea who I am.

There are ways to target followers with search, and if you have the right tools it is easy. I think it works better that way, but hey that's just my .02.
