Could you do me a Favor? 2 Quick Questions.

Hello warrior,

I've been helping out with a internet radio station, doing the normal things for traffic, press releases, articles etc and I am getting a respectable amount of traffic (More would be better :p )

Here is my problem, I am able to get people to the site, but I am having trouble getting them to listen to the stream.

I know that I am too close to it to take an objective view of the site, so here are two quick questions that I have.

When you look at the site:

Do you know there is an audio stream to listen to?

Do you know how to listen?

Here is the link to the site >> KC Cafe Radio

Thanks for all your answers and input

Mark

Try a Big Square Red Button on its own on a line above where it is now
    Yellow or White Text

    Listen Live NOW !

  • Hi Mark,

my 2 cents would be to make the button to stream the audio bigger and more flashy.

Honestly the placement is a little off to me because though it is at the top and in the middle it's in a place where a banner ad or something else might be.

I saw it but only because I was looking for it when I got there.

    I hope this helps!

    Mark,

I can see the green "Click Here To Listen" bar.
But I'd be tempted to tell people exactly what
    to do.

If you consider the hot spots that identify
where people look when landing on the site,
it might help to pinpoint the optimum position
    for the page elements.

At the moment, my guess is that the visitor
is seeing the "Playing now" boxes in the centre
of the page and not the Click here to listen box

I'd be tempted to break the symmetry to draw
the eye to where you want them to look and
then give them step by step instructions on
what specific action you wish to take.

Thanks for your input, I was wondering if the design was just too, ummm Let's just say "pretty" that it was invisible to many.

Thanks again for all your help...

Looking forward to more input too...

    Keep it coming warriors

I agree. It looks ok but probably might have missed it if i had come across the page on my own.

I would put a larger button and make sure it stands out and attracts the eye right away.

Hi Mark, I had to look around for it too - even though it was right there in front of me. Overall, my first impression was that the site is very "busy" and it may be that the first time visitor is getting distracted away from what you want them to do. That is, IF your goal is to get them to listen. I think there may be too many options for the visitor.

If your goal is to get them to buy things and click on various links, could you have a streaming feed of the station with a little "you are now listing to..." message? This way they listen automatcially?

Yes the primary goal is for listeners, for me the other things are secondary, thanks for your help ~!

Thanks for the input about the player not working for you, that was one of the things that I was wondering is how often is the player simply not working.

I'd take a look at websites for Over-Air radio stations and perhaps other online radio sites.

I looked at a few here in the Chicago IL area:
    wlsam.com/
    kiss1035.com/main.html
    q101.com/
    wxrt.com/
    wnua.com/main.html

What I noticed is they almost all use buttons like:
    "Listen Live"
"On Air Now ... Lorem Ipsum"
    "Click to Listen Live"

I'm not suggesting to COPY them, I think most of these sites are too busy for what you're probably looking for. Just study key elements, placement, how they emphasize and draw attention to certain site features.

And the dark-green button on your site just doesn't POP and draw attention
like on some of these other sites, I'd look more toward more Red/Yellow/White.

    I hope this helps ...

Almost forgot: I too think it is little cramped. Perhaps a little space above and below the three buttons.

    Hi Mark:

A couple of things and this comes from a former radio disc-jockey (me).

Obviously make the click this button to listen look catchy and be very visible to the eye. The consumer doesn't want to search for it.

Many people have not listened to radio on the internet so they have to be trained that it is easy and when they do click the stream must happen fast. They don't want to wait for minutes to hear the product.

Understand how fragmented peoples tastes are. Getting somebody there, making them comfortable, and having the proper format is a challenge. Can you give something away to gain new listeners and extend the time the existing ones stay on the site?

Maybe each day a new listener gets a gift by giving their email address and clicking the listen now button.

Find out what the competition is up to on their sites.

    Have a great night!

    Craig,

Thanks for your input, Yes I agree games and contests are a great way to generate listeners and interaction.

I've taken a look at the some of the heavy hitters in the streaming world, and there does not seem to be any constant trends as far as layout and design.

I am hesitant to have folks sign up, I don't currently have a good reason to keep contact with them, I'll have to rethink about that, of course there may be the real value in getting a list of listeners for sponsors etc.

Also load time for players, is always on the top of mind for net stations, the debate does not seem to have any clear winners as to what type or style to use.

    Thanks for your input ~!
